Thread regarding Alteryx layoffs

Big Marketing Egos Put In Their Place

There are a few folks still in the Marketing org who were continually pumped up and touted as “Superstars” during the prior CMO tenure. This went on for a couple of years and the egos (and the heads) swelled to unbelievable size.

With the PE layoff earlier this year the involved egos were quickly deflated and the folks involved came back down to earth, realizing that since their CMO cheerleader was no longer around, their direct reports stripped and laid off, that they had to either su-k it up or leave.

it’s been nice to see these few folks humbled and actually having to grind out work rather than constantly receiving glorious praise and adulation.

No I’m not talking about any of the current CMO’s direct reports.

If anything, demotions seem more likely—just like what happened with the Trifacta team.

Unless you’re the Trifacta PR person. Then, KP promotes you by THREE levels above your former role at Trifacta.

So, you're waiting around for stock payout, your bonus, and a raise. And a promotion ("role change"). Lol.

Why is everyone so convinced they’re getting promoted? If anything, demotions seem more likely—just like what happened with the Trifacta team.

Director today, manager tomorrow. Or worse—a quick win earns a promotion, only to be laid off 2-3 months later, just like others before them.

Not planning to stay here past March, just waiting on potential raises and role changes.

You forgot to mention your six-month bonus.

Sounds snowflake-y to me.

Not a single colleague in Marketing (literally I've spoken to at least two dozen colleagues in recent weeks / past few months) who is not actively interviewing with other companies. Or at minimum, aggressively searching for new roles outside of Alteryx.

Marketing was very toxic under the previous CMO and management. Is it still that way?

Previous CMO? Sharmila?

Marketing is always toxic.

What would make someone "unemployable"

A lot of factors: a poor attitude, a tarnished reputation, unreliable behavior, outdated management practices, and a skill set that hasn’t been refreshed in decades.

It was mentioned by some people during the offsite—though not news—that the remaining marketers are either struggling to find new roles due to rapid changes in business, tech, and marketing, are unemployable, or are waiting for layoffs to claim unemployment.

Everyone’s applying elsewhere, so stay cautious. Some people are masters at being fake and lying right to your face.

Need some details and context (no names or initials, please) on the backstabbing incident.

Why do you ask—are you with HR? Attempts were made.

Recordings (phone and video) have already been forwarded to Insight, Clearlake, the Division of Fair Labor Standards, and the Office of Legal Counsel.

The report contains everything from s-xism and ageism to all the other -isms.

  • They do not trust you.
  • There are people in Marketing who are spectacularly backstabbing each other.
  • You are being gullible.

It's a tough market out there, and the good jobs are few and far between. I think the issue is compounded by the fact that many, if not most, at Alteryx (at all levels) have been up-leveled 1-2 levels by title, and also they have been compensated higher than most employers are willing to pay for new hires right now. Unfortunately, it's not 2021 and 2022 anymore, and employers (again) have the upper hand on compensation and perks.

So, for many if not most of those who are actively leaving Alteryx for new roles, they are taking titles equivalent or a level below their Alteryx title, and they are taking pay cuts anywhere from 10-30%. And that doesn't include extra bonus and stock comp.

It's a hard bullet for many to bite, which is why many more people haven't already left the company!! Lots of folks are just biding their time, interviewing, and PRAYING for the right job to come along and land in their lap.

Rude awakening, eh? You all are going to have to bite the bullet and take a title and a pay cut. The sooner you face that, the easier it will be to land that job outside of Alteryx !!!!

You know it's true.

I’ve already seen one instance where a woman backstabbed a colleague, only to have it backfire spectacularly.

It’s more like two women tried to push someone out, and it completely backfired.

'We need people who want to take responsibility for their job and do real work that has value.'

To address that, you’d need to remove the expensive agencies people rely on as a shield—watch how quickly everything falls apart. There are still pockets of tech-marketing illiterate individuals throughout the company holding roles they should never have been placed in.

I work with someone who is threatening to quit unless promoted to leadership in Q1 2025. She has been here for 1.5 years, and her career background is completely unrelated to what we do at AYX.

I say to call this person’s bluff and just tell her NOW that she is NOT in line for a promotion and won’t be until she clearly demonstrates tangible value.

We don’t need and don’t want people like this at Alteryx. We need people who want to take responsibility for their job and do real work that has value.

No problem! Here's a senior-level role -- $140,000. Just remember to cry about wanting a promotion within 12 months, declare yourself THE subject matter expert, and insist that your one year of experience at Alteryx justifies such privilege."

This was so true. So many entitled marketing “pros” with 3 or 5 years of experience tho king they deserved Director or Sr. Director titles and salaries, yet don’t have the track record to back it up.

Yet Pi---l and his VPs promoted them anyway in a continuing big Rah Rah Team or-y of promotions. It was sickening to see for those of us who actually worked, had experience and ground out good solid work day after day.

Fortunately those days are gone. The OP has it exactly correct. People are actually having to WORK now u fee pressure from PE onto marketing management. Pursuing REAL work that has tangible bottom line contributions.

Accountability for money being spent.

Yes, change CAN be indeed…..refreshing !!

I would say like 95% of the discussions on this board center around Marketing. What the eff is going on over there?!?

Whenever sales decline, Marketing departments often take the blame, and that's when the team members starts turning on each other.

It's no surprise, considering some of them treat the workplace like their favorite reality TV drama.

Shocking.

No problem! Here's a senior-level role -- $140,000. Just remember to cry about wanting a promotion within 12 months, declare yourself THE subject matter expert, and insist that your one year of experience at Alteryx justifies such privilege."
