Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

So many people retiring

As Cardi B once said - that’s suspicious. What are your thoughts?

Some of them were holding out for severance. Not saying I agree/disagree with that, but seeing it often enough to notice.

If you have the age and service numbers but refuse to move, you are retired. I considered it being surplused but technically I retired and found another job before I was off payroll.

“why do people leaving a toxic company surprise you?”
Because in many cases it wasn’t their choice to leave.

It's like Kamala always says. You have to do the work to find the joy in the morning! These people didn't really retire though.

I'm in my early 50s and I'll "retire" if I get a severance to add to my pension lump sum and sizeable retirement fund. I'll be running with my bags of money laughing all the way to the bank.

They are not retiring, they are being forced to go, but it looks good for the company to say that and make yall believe they are retiring.. BS.
Most of them will try to find another but no jobs of course.

We have a lot of old systems that only the more experienced older crowd knows how to use

How is it that AT&T can function with so many old workers?

Stop it. You need to quit thinking that anyone over 35 has had their brains turn to mush. I assure you, the over 35 crowd thinks the same of some of the younger ones.

Basically a third of the company is over 50. Further numbers indicate that only 11% of employees are over 60 based on 2023 numbers. About 22.5% of the company is between 50-60. These numbers are also on par with the workforce in the general population. Notice it didn't say the general population, but the workforce. So stop with the ageism.

Here's the company numbers for 2023, and keep in mind that A LOT of over 50 employees have left since Jan 1.

Percent under 30 years old: 13.69%
Percent 30–50 years old: 53.19%
Percent over 50 years old: 33.12%

People are using the term "retiring" rather loosely. They're losing their jobs, either by choice or force. And many will go on to other jobs, so not retirement at all. All it means in terms of benefits is that they've earned enough years of service to be eligible for the full extent of what the company offers. Using the term "retiring" saves everybody face of 'did they quit, were they laid off,' etc.

Quoting cardi b only signifies who T is hiring. It does not bode well for T's future.
