I've been at a designated hub location for almost 7 years and was not directly impacted. I know I would leave if told to relocate even if my relocation expense was covered by the company. There would still be too much uncertainty. Are there a significant number of people actually doing a relocation at their own expense?

I’m absolutely stunned by the amount of people opting to move.
Not a fan of too much office chit chat, but learned this morning that four of the people sitting near me all relocated on their own dime. I guess the look on my face ki-led that topic.
I know of one who relocated. Wife still hasn't been able to get a job placement that matches her experience and education. They were blindsided by that one.
Some are simply afraid of the job market. It’s bad right now. Moving keeps the paychecks flowing. Some still have pensions they don’t want to lose too. Everyone’s situation and level of risk tolerance is different so can’t paint it with a broad brush.
My worry would be moving and then getting laid off anyway. But these hub locations have better opportunities geographically than many smaller non-hub locales.

I know some people are being offered relocation. Not sure I would do it even with that since there is still no job security and you could still be laid off and stuck with a new house and higher rates along with it. And now no support system if you left your friends and
extended family in a different state.
I also know someone moving themselves, but the new location would actually put them closer to family since they were originally from the same region.
Made the decision to move and looked for a new home close to both Costco and WalMart.
I know of one, but he already planned to move closer to Atlanta and the relocation requirement timing fit into his plans.
People who move are laid off after moving. If they ask you to move, just leave. Trust me.
A of managers are experiencing the certainty of limited options in the job market after applying for external positions during the past year and realizing a move is the best option. A couple team members originally planned to say no but are now making plans to move.
Mission accomplished.
No, and that’s the whole point
