Manager telling me to look for something else

Been in the team for years and was considered a good performer. All until this reorg. New manager telling me alot of my team members are complaining about me and I need to work on myself. AS he put it, performance issues.

Last week on my one on one he told me, I think you should look for another role that better suits you. I am like what's wrong with what I am doing currently? Response was that you are not growing and helping others grow. All of it sounds very vague. I think he wants to push me out. Spoke to another team member and he said manager doesn't like you so coming up with excuses. Question is do I wait it out for a LR? I am worried they put me on PIP and then I have no job and no severance later. Market is pretty bad and I dont want to look around.

Came out of the blue. Not surprising given lack of leadership at the top

@OP please update on turn of events and progression. Did you nail the source of problem, is it you or others a concern? Has manager doing same with other members in team? Are you in sales, CX or BE?

Do you [Does your manager] always believe your manager’s hearsay?

FTFY. In many cases management has said openly in team meetings that the answer to that question is "yes."

My ex-manager didn't like me too. He moved me to another team. Six months later I was LR'ed. Got a nice package though after 21 years at Cisco.

They are actually doing you a favor. You need to find another job and move on before they decide to move on from you. instead you’re wasting your time whining and complaining on the Internet when you should be looking for another job

Red flags all over here. Sounds like a toxic manager creating conflict and insecurities in others. People who say those types of things aren’t leaders and should never be put in a leadership position. Unfortunately, all my managers were extremely poor leaders who made themselves feel better by creating conflict and putting others down.

OP- do you really want to deal with this negativity ? Find another job while you still have one and move on for a fresh start . Be kind to yourself , mental health cannot be overlooked .

Do you always believe your manager’s hearsay?

Lots many managers in Cisco are politicians who love to play politics and create team frictions. Get on a call with everyone that has concerns and hash it out. Be a man 👨.

Not sure if this post is true, but when a group of coworkers complain about a good performer then it means the they are insecure about their work and it is easier to point the finger than to build their skills up again and be accountable. Usually the targeted person is not part of the same race as the group. It’s sad but it happens more than often.

Sounds like the old manager was your buddy and kept you around. Here's the deal - if you were skating before or marginally acceptable you better be ready to step it up now. Everyone is being scrutinized (except the ELT of course). You should listen to the mgr and look now. There doesn't need to be an LR to get rid of anyone so if that's all people think they may want to revisit that.

This is fiction

Most people I work with at Cisco do a few hours a week of real work, all of them should have been terminated years ago

All of them get "excellent" reviews

Cisco keeps people "content" right up until the LR

Cisco simply does not consider performance at all

look for a job externally... it's easier to negotiate salary when you actually have a job

"... others are complaining about you" is so general without any evidence or data. Political BS.

Push on it further to get real verifiable quotes than let the manager jerk you around. This is how he said, she said starts and is all political. Start documenting everything that may be helpful later as manager has to build a case against you for PIP, and that has to be based on facts, and not what others are complaining.

This is the general trend in Cisco leadership of managing people out in a rotten culture. This is all BS, but its also hard to fight against jerky managers.

Possible that the new manager was put in place because the team needed to evolve, and the previous manager, while providing you feedback that you were doing well, was frankly not really assessing the contributions of the team appropriately. And yes, if others are complaining about you, worth exploring that a bit. Down deep, I'm sure you know if you're bringing the value that is expected. Now as for PIP, they will offer you an early separation option in lieu of going through the PIP process. But look, if you're so good, there are other roles open in Cisco, so go compete for one of those roles.

It's always best to be looking for work while employed. If this manager has his old team, and you are now part of that, it means that you're most certainly going to be eliminated.

I'm sorry but this is a big red flag:

"alot of my team members are complaining about me"

If this is true, then your manager is not the problem. You really need to identify what is it that your colleagues are complaining about. If I was you I would find more about this from your colleague, even if you find another job.
