Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Unprofessional TA & Recruitment

I am genuinely just curious because I’ve never experienced this in other companies I have applied for. I’ve been applying to many roles as a former Nike employee. The recruiters either never respond after the initial hiring manager interviews or just completely ghost you.

I had one recruiter who made me go through seven interviews, they call me and then hang up, I call back and email back even, absolutely zero response. I don’t even get an automated workday email, just find out through the workday portal a month later. Another one emails me wanting to get to know then emails back and says “oh sorry this was a mistake”. Another one just completely ghosts me after the HM interview. TAs emails full of error mistakes. Is this the norm at Nike?

I’ve interviewed at Google, Microsoft and other bigger companies and the recruiters go out of their way to help you navigate and prep you for the interviews. & even when you don’t get it, they even call you to let you know because and I quote, “I didn’t want to just email you a cold email and wanted ti tell you this in a phone call”. I understand we’re just numbers to you, and you’re just trying to fill a role, but this is beyond unprofessional. I’ve done everything right, I networked, I did resume workshops, interview workshops, worked on taking extra courses, have all the great references on hand, reached out to my former network & always had HS rating, this is just exhausting.

TA is full of nepotism. Most of TA is hired into the company by friends or family- heck, one recruiter is daughter of a Nike finance dude. It’s not a fair system, and it shows.

TA is mess! Not their fault. Awful leadership and countless RIF’s thanks to MM & PR.

TA has always been terrible at Nike.

A decade ago they arrogantly thought "We're Nike. People live their entire lives hoping to work for us. If you really wanted this job you'd put your other offers on hold and wait 2 months for our hiring process." All while the hiring manager is messaging TA daily "When can we get them in for the next interview?"

It's even worse today with all the dysfunctional unqualified hires & promotions that have happened over the last few years.

I support efforts to be equitable but don't play games with me. Wasting my time, half a dozen applicant's time, and your time. TA, show me qualified applicants only. Don't force me to interview wildly unqualified people (with the 'right' characteristics) for a month before you finally hand me resumes that actually have the technical experience listed on the job req.

Wow, you must be the “toxic culture” everyone talks about at Nike. What a mean person you are. Do comments like this make you feel better? An automated rejection email to a job you applied for is one thing, but going through nearly eight rounds of interviews only to be ghosted without the courtesy of a rejection is unacceptable. Treating people with respect—kindness and communication is the point here.

That TA team is completely beaten down. I was on it for a couple of years, and it was, without question, the worst experience of my professional life. The previous VP was a sociopath with zero skills or original ideas—just coasting while everyone else did her work. The irony of her branding herself as a “coach” on LinkedIn is almost laughable.

As for the current VP, while I can’t speak to her competence as a leader, I do know she’s mastered the political game, often at the expense of others. MM should be ashamed. How many times has she laid off people from this team, only to rehire for the same roles? It’s a revolving door, and the recruiters are barely hanging on.

Blame MM. She kept a terrible VP of TA in place for years. This person destroyed the function. Zero clue how to run the team. Now there is a pretty junior person leading the team. She is smart and nice, but zero experience running at team for this size of company. Good luck to you all.

Laid off recruiter here. There were multiple rounds of quiet layoffs in TA before the big layoffs in April. There is a skeleton crew left. Su-ks for those left and all of us let go.

Nike has always struggled when it comes to TA. The only team within TA that does well is the ones that oversee the internship program, and they struggle too

TA is slammed, everywhere, and especially at Nike. That you’re not receiving this experience elsewhere in this job market is surprising.

The sheer volume of applicants for each role is astonishing, the pace they are trying to hire before cuts, with a virtually bare bones team is insane.

It’s not you and it’s not Nike. I’ve experienced this at many other places, including some of those you mentioned as well. It’s just the nature of AI applicants burying everyone

I just received the “mistake” email last week. I emailed back the first congrats we want to interview you, and found out the HR person is an ETW. They again said it was a mistake, but now I have a name.

TA is understaffed. Still no excuse but the experience you get are a byproduct of the resources.

Why would you even want to go back?!

I moved away from the Portland area and would never go back to Nike, even if they called and offered me a promotion. Nike is toxic and I would never trust that company with its constant re-orgs. I am so glad to put that chapter behind me.

Best of luck OP but there are a lot better places to work, in my opinion.

The TA team was completely decimated by countless re-orgs in the last 12-18 months. I suspect the entire TA function was outsourced and the TA leadership bought into the workday hype. Btw, workday is universally hated internally too. Good luck to you OP and I hope something comes through for you.

I'm sorry to hear that's how things have played out OP, really tough.

It's one thing to "expect" others to take care of you while not doing much then whining about it after. (I've seen that a lot)

But you CLEARLY worked hard at this and did all (and more) that I could think of to succeed. To then get blocked out by the Recruiters is asinine.

Another clue about you is you write well, good spelling, punctuation, bigger words (heh) so clearly intelligent.

Is it possible (and yes I'm reaching, could just be stupid recruiters) that you are in an area where the number of resumes is like 500 per job type thing? Getting lost in the shuffle as it were? Are you management or worker bee?

Anyway keep at it, something has to break right?
