Recently displaced due to location strategy. Maybe I missed this or somehow glossed over this with everything else going on with the displacement. Is it true it is against policy for existing WF employees to provide references or recommendation letters to former employees?? I was not ever on Needs Improvement or a Performance Plan.

You can give someone a personal reference but not speaking as an employee of Wells Fargo.
Against policy, yes. It can absolutely backfire on you, I've seen it happen.
People are human, though. If asked privately most would probably agree to do it.
Rule of thumb as a manager if asked for a reference for a former employee, do one of two things. 1. If the employee was a solid employee or above, I will give them a reference. 2. If the employee was below mediocre, I will refer the potential employer to the 800 number.
I don't believe it has changed. You are not supposed to vouch for any co worker or former co worker on Linkedin. You know, that recommendation section they have.
Ya it’s true. HR is how all employment verifications are to be done.
@OP+1v9GM0BL, high-level mgr speaking here, it’s true. But there are ways around it esp if needing someone to vouch for your technical skills, expertise, etc. In this environment, keep a few good, genuine working relationships on hand.
It may depend on who is providing the reference.
Co-workers can...some managers might.... I heard "policy" was to have employment verified by calling HR's 800 number. They would verify your employment dates and if re-hirable.

It is comically true that it is against policy for me to be a reference for a former coworker, but under some specific circumstance. I remember the notice saying “on social media” but immediately stopped trying to make sense of it.
No employer can interfere with anyone acting as a personal reference for anyone.
