Military veterans are a protected class. I think the OP was referring to over-representation in the layoffs with Veterans. Not sure about Veterans, but typically older workers are targeted for layoffs as they have, on average, larger salaries, more PTO, and more healthcare expense.
What do you mean by protected? These were layoffs. It has nothing to do with protected classes.
