Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Full RTO

Amazon just announced they'll expect their employees back in the office five days a week starting in January. They're opening the season, and you know many will follow. I'm betting we'll get a similar announcement if not before the end of this year, then in the first quarter of the next.

No one with a tech career wants to move to Beaverton. That’s why pre-pandemic you had armies of tech consultants flying in every week and carpooling to campus from hotels in rental cars. The tech consultants were necessary because if everything wasn’t totally broken, they wouldn’t have been paid to come in to fix it. Staff augmentation was required because the local talent did not exist and established national talent would not relocate to Beaverton. Remote work is vastly superior to business travel or daily commuting unless you are in a sales role or performing manual labor. Sounds like many of these comments are conflating WFH with offshoring, which has definitely not worked well for Nike or anywhere else I’ve been,

If you're "out of sight, out of mind" then that's exactly you're problem. Not working from home. You're doing it wrong.

Working from home is no reason to be out sight. I can promise you I have more visibility now than I did at the office.

Sounds like you're a little bitter and that you probably don't do good work when remote, so you're projecting it on others.

I think many people are delusional that full RTO will somehow magically make people show up in the office all five days and move back closer to campus. That does not easily happen in the current environment with record high housing costs, shortage of available childcare or lack of convenient commuting options. I have no doubt Nike will follow Amazon's lead (Nike has always been a follower with these mandates) at some point, but actually enforcing five onsite days is entirely different story.
Also, if you do anything even close to tech related, there are still plenty of remote options. Some companies actually see that as a competitive advantage.

In my current circumstance, I am orders of magnitude more productive from my home office which is setup to optimize my performance. The onsite experience team could not come close to setting up a proper working space on campus . My team and leaders are aware and specifically tell me to stay home during busy periods, so we can hit the required deadlines. One size does not fit all.

I wish Nike leaders had the ba--s and would follow Amazon. But these loser's themselves WFH and are remote so it's unlikely.

@mfb+1uyN5Xwq People who are going to quit don’t publicly announce it like some kind of threat. They just do it. Publicly announcing that you’re going to quit is just venting. Actions speak much louder than hollow, anonymous words.

Most people won’t quit for two reasons: they’re comfortable enough in their current role so as to not want to risk a new job (something that comes with its own unique set of risks & stresses since the grass is most certainly not always greener) and there aren’t a lot of companies still allowing 100% remote work. The competition for those jobs is even higher than with other companies, and when you work 100% remote you greatly increase the chance that if or when your new company decides to trim staff, you’ll be near the top of the list. Out of sight, out of mind.

If you want to quit then quit. I can promise Nike won’t care. If anything you’ll be one less person Nike has to layoff next year.

Ready for this already… 5 days a week is what it should be. Besides I’ve been preparing mentally for this as I heard rumors this was going to happen.

The wE nEeD tO bE iN tHe oFfIce employees are all 40+ year olds reminiscing about the good ole’ Nike days. Stagnant. Stuck in the past boomers who refuse to understand that the dynamic has shifted post-covid.

The other half have kids and families they need an escape from. And some of you have your identity tied into Nike. Work is your life so of course you want to be there 5 days a week. You probably lead with I work at Nike with every new person you meet.

Some are productive at home, some aren’t. It’s not black and white. Give people the flexibility and trust they’ll do their jobs correctly. Have you been to campus in the last year? Campus is Mordor at this point.

You hang layoffs over our heads for months. Finally have a re-org. It’s a complete sh-t show. The CEO has checked out. Of course no one wants to be in the fu--ing office.

I get more done remotely than you do in person, no doubt. I'm not a naysayer and I'm not threatening anyone.

Theres no reason for me to be in the office, and if I have to be, I won't work here anymore because I won't commute.

Not threat. Fact. You'd be ignorant to not realize that this stance is a disadvantage and Nike will lose what talent they have left to competitors that DO offer full remote.

But go ahead and chase away your best...what's left of them.

@fse’s opinion isn’t popular but he or she isn’t wrong. When I “work from home” I have way too many other things I can or would rather be doing. This creates a situation where I usually put in no more than 2 hours of actual work when I’m at home. If that. Everyone will swear “That’s not me, I’m different” while knowing darn well they do the same thing.

If peoples work from home habits were more closely monitored we would have already been back in the office 5 days/week. If you want to make people very angry just confront them with unpleasant truths like this.

And the stock price has only gone down since rto. Then even more when 4 days announced. 5 days for a ~50$ stock price.

As a project manager, I hope this isn’t the case. Productivity has tanked since January!
People are just exhausted and the shoulder taps make it hard again to manage work. I have coworkers or have been sick more since January than the past 10 yrs combined.
This would just make everything worse.

Back to the office is unfortunately the way to go for most of us. I was digging WFH but honestly I get distracted and end up goofing off way too much.

They will for sure follow suit. As will other companies. They need to justify their massive real estate foot prints. And don’t forget about state and local government kickbacks.

Yes!!! @sgg+1uyN5Xwq Time for the naysayers and chronic complainers to get in or get gone!

There is so much positive potential if everyone was back in the office- at all levels and not exceptions. And for those that feel they need to be remote- perfect- this is the chance for you to take action and leave. The constant complain and threat of leaving is one of the biggest problems the company faces from a culture POV. Y’all want the paycheck while you sit and bi$!h about your team, your leader, your unfair work environment- time to get hungry and do what it takes to win. The company owes you nothing.

It’s not the time. They have lost the people, morale is at an all time low, and output is in the toilet. Theres no reason to do this unless they’re trying to purge before layoffs again

I like being in the office on Fridays. No sarcasm. Just helps be in the right mindset for working and productivity. Not the popular opinion, and I get that, but to each their own. Also have a family, kids, and life with sports and other things like many people. Doesn’t impact it at all.

who cares? Are you an AI bot that is posting on every company layoff site? And if not, and you are a human, then that's a lot of typing.
