Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Promotions?

Has your team promoted anyone in the past year? Mine hasn’t had any in over a year.

Expect more externals with headcount crack down. Promotions unlikely.

A lot of functions in digital are super into “promoting” a director into an LT, which means reporting into a VP and doing the job of SD but getting paid less. Looks nice on Outlook, but not sure it’s really meaningful career / comp wise…

@1xum+1ukPrqO8, based on the latest RIF, I'm assuming you mean they use the performance review to identify people who are talented, doing a good job, but won't just fall in line with what their leader says because they know it's wrong?

For GT / TO, the only way to get promoted is to move to ITC

First time I saw someone hired for a position despite the results of the “panel interview” picking several other resources ahead of the selected candidate, … or many other far worse things I’ve seen, I knew it was all a joke. Experienced first hand Tech Vendors sending one candidate to the interview and another shows up on site, seen someone hire their unqualified relatives into Senior positions, and I’ve seen a Dir pitting one person against another in order to get rid of them both and hire their friends from a prior job. If it’s sleazy it’s easy I guess. Only got worse with the push to outsource. Now we get told we can only hire from certain vendors even if the other still approved one brings a better and cheaper candidate. Follow the $, is all about the $$$$

I’m pretty new to Nike, but something I've noticed is that I haven’t seen promotions being officially announced or teammates celebrating them. Am I missing something? It kind of feels like promotions aren’t decided in a very open or fair way.

Nike does not have promotions as part of its talent process. Every position needs to be posted for competitive process and they select the “best” talent (HINT- They just select whoever the VP told to apply for the role). Promotions will only happen in a re-org which doesn’t include any actual data on the employee and led by clueless leaders making decisions on people they don’t know.

If you can’t get promoted then why have a performance review or talent rating? The only point of this it to put you on the hit list in the next RIF. There is zero benefit to the employee. I got multiple high ratings, no promotion or pay increase - just more and more work, then laid off with no reason given. Thanks Nike.

I recently achieved a promotion once the dust settled in June.

You are all weak and need to try harder.

No one on my team has been promoted in two years. Our leadership is to blame entirely as they can't advocate for others if they can't advocate for themselves. We need less leaders in name only and more people who at least stand for something other than a paycheck.

Those promotions I saw in my org were during latest reorg actually..bunches of people got promotion overnight without a single interview. Fair process? Absolutely not!

@dcn+1ukPrqO8, so true. In supply chain, we're constantly told that Nike does not promote and that every role is an open and competitive process. Of course our team then see's NXT and PC promoting people, which just further shows how the company does not actually have a consistent approach to talent and why the best either leave or are asked to leave through RIFs.

Isnt there a rule (that leaders are exempt from) that there needs to be a fair process for open roles? Promotions for a job well done are rare. Again, unless you’re a leader that clearly cares more about what the people in power above you think than how the teams you’re supposed to be leading and supporting feel about you, that seems to be the only trait that’s rewarded here.
