Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Global Tech Burnout

I've been here more than 15 years. I'm so burnt out in tech.

50 different departments all developing their own roadmaps without talking to others.

Shoddy implementations excused.

No buy-in from leaders on practically anything.

Bickering and t-t-for-tat anger between CIS and Technical Operations on godda-n everything.

No real collaboration between teams. Everyone's just out to get theirs.

Non-technical leaders believeing every garbage word their even-less-technical reports say.

ETW and contractor led projects. Nobody stays. Nobody cares.

No basic anything.

All our team mate's were fired...

Nike WAS great. Now it's a dying ship to work at with leaders that don't care to fix anything. Just more turnover, more change in direction, more "this will save us," more justifications on firing our friends and technical experts, more directionless Voodoo and bullsh-t words that everyone convinces themselves will save us until the next set of directionless voodoo and bullsh-t words.

I really do care about my work. I try to make it happen. I want to strive. I want to care about my work. I want Nike to care about my work. Nike doesn't want that. It's a shame and it su-ks.

There are plenty of companies that will value all of the same things.

Looking for the nearest exit...so disappointed in my life here these days and I'm so fu--ing sad to say any of this.

GT has been a train wreck for long time, first GT leader came from a tech dump yard if K***l’s and caused mayhem. Nothing changed since then.

The original Nike Tech and Nike Digital separation was better than what we have now.

VP should be fired for creating chain on do nothing orgs

we have a major engagement issue in GT and its only going to get worse with this leadership team. These VPs are not leaders...

Reading through the comments on this site , we have shared experience of horrific and toxic workplace GT has unfolded into.
But I also believe there is no surprise here .. Nike's Olympic ad "Winning isn't for everyone" made an announcement to the world about of work culture

Incase anyone needs reminder, it says "I have no empathy, I don't respect you. I have an obsession with power. I have no sense of compassion....." yada yada ..

These are new values of Nike.. self absorbed, road rolling and destroying others.
Those who are not able to step up and answer yes to "Am I a bad person" are suffering.

GT needs less “leaders” and more doers. Manager-senior manager-director-senior director this is a chain 4 levels who basically do nothing .. some of them believe they do a lot cause they forward emails with words FYI! Oh and some of them believe they should be promoted cause they have been around ! The reason they have been around cause no one else will hire them!!!
And don’t even get me started on these distinguished engineers, they are a bunch of bullies who fight with each other and drag the teams with them through the mud and the VPs have no backbone or interest to do anything about it. As if these distinguished engineers are getting paid for creating conflicts, expensive dinners and walk around like they own the place. When someone asks something to them, it’s always someone else who is responsible for the work, they are never responsible for anything.
I hope they at least do a mental exercise of what if we eliminate these level and what would be the impact!
What is the point of manager reporting to senior manager who reports to a director ? —> More paths of escalations.

“No real collaboration between teams. Everyone's just out to get theirs.”

Pretty much sums most leadership behavior now. No true leadership. Just everyone out for themselves, looking to protect their current position or for shortcuts for that next promotion.

You expressed how I am feeling working in GT. I can't believe the BS I see on a weekly basis and the morale has never been lower.

I've been in GT about the same amount of time. The thing is, when I first joined, we had one of those employee engagement surveys and I was exposed to the raw data that year. Back then, more than 75% of tech employees reported that they were unhappy or unengaged, and the same percentage would not recommend working at Nike to a friend. And that was over a decade ago! I can't imagine what the numbers are now. I stayed because I was on a good team and thought I could make a difference, which is harder to believe now. I don't feel like anything I do is valued or matters in GT anymore, so I am also looking at an exit strategy.

Tech has been like that since 2010. I’ve never seen tech successful at Nike, hence I got out of there and went into the business. Sure the money pays better but at least I’m not dealing the toxic culture.
