If you could tell John Chambers something in 2000

What would you tell him?

Adjusted for inflation cisco stock today is meandering around $3.14 and $3.1415 based on the genius math guy.

Nice dadaism. Adjusting what for inflation from or to what other point in time?

If you're referring to the previous post, Chambers drove the price from $82 to $8 and if you hold the horizontal guide on the Cisco stock chart at $25 you'll see that for his last 15 years the stock was below that line most of the time. Chuck doubled it in four years and given the lack of development skills and technical debt that's probably as far as it will go.

Build a competent development organization that understands scalability and maintainability so you don't end up with four networking operating systems that need to be replaced instead of one. Some consequences of having not done this:

  1. You'll spend many tens of billions of dollars on bug fixing instead of creating new products, pi----g off customers, employees and investors the whole way
  2. You can't even operate your own equipment in house at a small scale relative to the coming cloud
  3. Your customers have no consistency not only from product to product but from one line card to a functionally equivalent cost reduced line card
  4. Your customers will spend a year or more doing the testing on a single image Cisco couldn't do and still have to rollback that image shortly after being deployed
  5. It will take a long time for small competitors to become solid enough for the biggest customers to put weight on them but it will happen and they will eat market share because you will continue to become less competitive

Some smaller tips: don't talk of "100 first priorities" like you have any attachment to reality. Don't tell your people "not to fall in the trap of helping other people" because middle management will translate that into demanding technical leadership perform no form of leadership. Someday you'll say layoffs every year are a sign of bad management after you've done it for like a decade, which demonstrates you can't figure out you're that bad management.

When you purchase Meraki, build everything on that cloud platform and lead the way.

Apparently the legacy monkeys of 2024 still haven't figured out people don't use the cloud for networking, they use it for services. Meraki was funded in part by Google, a company that provides services on a worldwide scale and started its cloud service only 2 years after Meraki was founded, both long before Cisco bought Meraki. If Meraki was the gateway to ruling the cloud why didn't Google buy out the rest?

Cisco should be the magic router in the sky, not Amazon, etc.

Yeah. Cisco would have crushed cloud management with read-only SNMP in 2006.

Triple down on Intercloud, baby! And drop the "30 market adjacencies"! Oh, and Boards and Councils, too, now that I think about it. And stop telling employees, "this is the company you will retire from".

I am sure there are few more. "What do you hope to get from this conversation"?
