A friend told me he goes directly to company websites, looks for their careers sections, and applies for jobs from there. He said he got more interviews like that than any other way. I never tried it. I use primarily Indeed and I haven't had much success lately. Am I doing it all wrong?

I have a list with links to job portals of companies I would love to work for that I check every single morning. Speed is KEY. I get more traction with quick applications and no referrals than waiting on a referral. Good luck.
by the time jobs post in LinkedIn and indeed there are 100s of applications. your best bet is to make a list of target companies you want to work for and set up job alerts on their careers page. an email will be sent out to you once a job is opened that matches your interest and you apply directly. try to apply within the first few days, otherwise you application may get lost in the abis.

Applying directly to the company's website is always the best option, but an even better option is finding the company TA/recruiter for the role you are interested in and connecting with them directly.
Just google the company name and careers, should be the first link that pops up 9 times out of 10
