Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Federal mediation

Notice from CWA

Yesterday, our bargaining team received notice from AT&T’s representatives, that the company wants to enter into federal mediation. Considering AT&T’s bad faith tactics during these negotiations, our bargaining team is hopeful that mediation might lead us to the agreement our members deserve. Currently, we are scheduled to meet with the federal mediator tomorrow morning. Until then, we will continue to bargain, and have plans to return to the bargaining table later this afternoon.

Just means we’ll get a standard contract like D9. Maybe they can give 2 years severance like D9

Have no issue with using a mediator, good faith bargaining should happen now. High inflation and the company making billions in net profit, a fair contract should come out of this process. There is a template from contracts already signed, over the last couple of years.

Federal Mediation is bad news for members. CWA uses mediation to force a contract on members because it wants to avoid a strike. This is not a tool to help us.
Remember CWA National passed a resolution where they can skim off the strike fund to maintain operations. They don't want you to strike because now they would have to pay members for picket duty. This would cause havoc with National finances.
This strike fund was supposed to be only for strikes, no it's being used to maintain a bloated payroll

Union will return to work Thursday. If an agreement is not reached a walkout will happen again until a tentative agreement is on the table. That’s how it works., Wire techs may be passed over again.

“T has nothing to lose leveraging federal mediators because their generous donations to various Political action committees are far more generous than CWAs.”

It appears you are suggesting unethical practices, quid pro quo. Is that how the company operates? Are you an official spokesperson?

I can’t wait for morning picket duty and talk to the managers dispatching on their CP assignment. Will tell them how the company is going to drag this out longer by using a govt agency to mediate. The look will be priceless, I can see my manager blowing his top! Really need to video this interaction. 😜

“What happened to all the 🍺 muscles you union slugs had ? Thought you were going to strike ? No surprise ,the union and members are pathetically weak….….”

News flash…..the Union has been on an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike since Friday at 3 pm. Pathetic, if you want to troll, at least keep up with the news! You’re fired!

The company is already crying to daddy after a short 4 day strike. Maybe it will finally get settled so, they can’t drag it out over 5 months past contract expiration like, they have with D9 this year, their contract is still not ratified.

They went past the contract expiration for D3 in 2019, the union filed a ULP then had a strike because the company was using unqualified representatives. The company proceeded to fly in new negotiators from Dallas, TX who were able to make decisions, answer questions so, it was settled and ratified quickly. A pattern has developed, similar circumstances this time.

From FLRA.gov - Negotiation Impasse

“In carrying out the obligation to bargain collectively, it is not uncommon for parties to simply not agree on certain issues and, during bargaining, to reach an impasse. In the federal sector, the next step after bilateral negotiations fail to result in a settlement is for the parties to find a third-party neutral to provide mediation assistance. In such circumstances, the parties may agree to bilateral arrangements, or they may seek assistance from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS). If the parties still cannot reach a voluntary settlement, either side, or the parties jointly, may seek assistance from the Federal Service Impasses Panel (FSIP).“

Not uncommon occurrence and no checkmate. It’s mediated by a neutral party which, will see that the company proposals are way below any offerings from recent ratified contracts and D9’s TA which, hasn’t been ratified. If an impasse occurs at the first step then, on to the next, the FSIP.

"No such notice was issued"

See BR #47. Some of the Locals have not shared 46 or 47. This problem is being corrected.

You’re right it’s not a notice it’s an update.

Either way they’re meeting with federal mediators tomorrow.

"Notice from CWA"
Calling BS. No such notice was issued.

That actually is language from Update #47. Interestingly, the person who posts the CWA updates has the same love of commas as someone who posts here a lot.

The company is checking off one box after another. It reflects poorly on the union for calling a strike rather than being the party to request the Federal Mediator in an effort to further negotiations. This really is like a game of chess, and the company has played the trash talk from the union brilliantly.

“ So what does this mean for the strike?”

It means that AT&T wants to be on record as entering into federal mediation to prove that they’re willing to bargain in good faith. Continued walkouts by CWA will give the appearance that CWA is the bad actor at the bargaining table.

T has nothing to lose leveraging federal mediators because their generous donations to various Political action committees are far more generous than CWAs.

Previous to this news the problem has been the company didn’t really want to make a deal at all. This does correlate with what I’ve been hearing for a while. The company doesn’t want to enter into an agreement at all. Executives get a rubber stamp huge raise and bonus even with pitiful decisions and wants to punish the guy that worked thru Covid in sick peoples homes. Kinda ridiculous when you think about it.
