Thread regarding CVS layoffs

Identity crisis

The problem with CVS is that it does not know what it is- Retail store? PBM? Insurance company? Health care delivery? You cannot do all these things well despite KL delusions. Insurance is a crazy business right now that needs laser focus to succeed. I have been here over 20 years on the Aetna side. I firmly believe they will take a look at the underperforming areas and that is where the cuts will occur. Which for CVS is the insurance business. This is what KL is taking the reigns there. There may be a modicum of layoffs in the other business units but HCB is going to be reviewed with a fine tooth comb and to be honest there is a lot of redundancies. Everyday I ask myself....what does so and so actually do??? I have 8 directs. The best advice I can given anyone is accentuate your strengths- make sure you boss knows what you know that others don't, self promote, help your team, raise your hand and don't be shy. When I had to make my list last year the one I let go was the only one on my team who didn't know a specific business line. I asked myself who can I live without and hurt the least. Dont be that person. Any decent boss will use similar criteria if they have any say. Good luck scary times

Good advice by the OP regarding Manager / Employee dynamics. Alternate advice might be to not need a boss.....

Nobody in this company does any actual real work. I run a project where all I’m expected to do is monitor dates and provide updates. Every team that contributes to the project has consultants doing their work for them. Need legal advice? Contact the legal department so they can have a law firm look into it. Need to know tax implications? Contact the Tax department so Deloitte can look into it. Need a regulatory permit? Contact Compliance so they can have a firm apply for the permit. Need a system improvement? Schedule a call with the product manager so they can forward to 20 other product managers and listen to them all pass the buck and say so-and-so needs to be involved. Schedule the next call with those same 20 product managers, 15 more product managers and all of their consultants, and listen to them tell you it will take 9 months to implement, 3 months to test, and 2 months to cutover.

Doing real work is frowned upon here and I am just as guilty as anyone else. Bangalore can do 95% of the corporate jobs here for 1/10 the cost. It doesn’t take real skills to ask some outside firm to do something. A reckoning is coming.

It's obvious the person or persons who keep initiating these DEI posts are trolls who need to justify their own failure, and not people who should be taken seriously. But honestly - troll or not - anyone this obsessed needs to see a mental health professional.

The problem with DEI programs is that it creates a false belief to many that an individual was hired because they met a certain criteria, and not based on merit alone. Is that really how you’d want to be viewed?

The anti DEI and anti inclusion folks miss the value of those initiatives to a business like CVS. Perhaps it's to justify their own failure to advance in their careers. Marginalized folks feeling valued and included builds loyalty. During Covid low wage people learned that they had more power than they assumed and stopped working for small change. That makes it harder to staff adequately given a specific budget. Those DEI folks and those working through their gender challenges may end up being your best employees.

As to the topic at hand, totally agree CVS has its hand in too many pies. I don't want my dr-g store to be my doctor and have my Rx costs subsidizing their failures elsewhere. Check GoodRx and see who has the highest prices on most Rx.

You’re right. CVS needs to get out of identity politics and cut DEI funding. Funds need to be allocated towards true revenue generating business segments
