I was interviewing for a promotion and was told the position has been put on hold because there is now a hiring freeze. Im still pretty new to CVS, how long have freezes last in the past? Also does this mean there are potential layoffs coming?

I've resigned myself to not really giving a sh-t about this place anymore.
At least they told you the job was put on hold. I applied for a position, was contacted for phone screen and stood up. I emailed an HR rep who apologized and another rep scheduled me for a phone screen. I proceeded with that and interviewed with the hiring manager and haven't heard anything since. That was 4 weeks ago and the position was supposed to start on July 15th. I don't expect much from a company I don't know about but I do expect a lot more from a company I've worked for for over 8 years. Lord knows they expect me to go above and beyond. I will never try for an internal position again. I'm on my way out of this horrible mess.
To your second ques, yes
Last time it was until after the new year/new budget.
