Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Stockholm syndrome

That's the only way I can explain why attrition at T isn't ten times higher than it is right now. This place bullies its employees, maltreats us in every way possible, lies to us, continues to cut our benefits, and even with all of that, attrition is ridiculously low. What else can it be other than Stockholm syndrome?

It might be too much for OP to comprehend but there is something called paycheck. And not everyone is as disgruntled as him.

"It’s like Shawshank Redemption. You’re all lifers"

Grown-ups, that's the word you were reaching for. The meaning of GROWN-UP is not childish or immature : adult.

I think AT&T played this very... sneakily. They lay off some people, those that get the short stick don't feel lucky, I know from experience, but a nice severance helps. Then they force others into their cr-ppy offices, and these people are wishing to be laid off too and get paid to leave. Knowing you can get money to leave, potentially, makes people want to wait for it. I also know this from experience. AT&T knows it, so they keep this around as a possibility, in the meantime ensuring people don't actually leave on their own. I'm convinced that if they made a voluntary offer, we'd see thousands, if not dozens of thousands, lining up to take it.

“and we are all buying gas to drive in to sit in empty cubicle farms for no reason.”
Only if you are in a different station of life.

Soon T will be asking employees to pay to come to work.

Plenty of folks have to pay to park at their location, and we are all buying gas to drive in to sit in empty cubicle farms for no reason.

“I get paid good money for a 30 hour a week job. If you know somewhere else that offers that, let me know.”
This is true except the 30 hours seems a little exaggerated. This is also the core reason T is failing.

Severance is 6 months. Only place that has bonuses this big. Of course people stick like glue. Health benefits su-k so it’s not that. When the rumors ring true for sev and bonus, see people leave in droves.

Most of the people that are waiting to be surplussed have been here long enough to have a pension. They figure it is better to let that keep growing along with the 401k match until they get let go. Also why leave before you get your severance package.

With few exceptions, T does not have skilled employees. This is why attrition is low. Most have no other options.

It probably has a lot to do with the job market and economy. Unfortunately now isn’t a great time to look for new job that’s going to pay what you’re making now. And if you’ve been here 20+ years, you’re kind of pigeon-holed into staying here until you hopefully make retirement instead of starting over when you’re pushing 50.

It’s like Shawshank Redemption. You’re all lifers. We’re like Andy. Every day, chipping away at the cell wall and undermining AT&T corrupt leadership. They give special treatment to people who help them sustain their lies, but those are the people who will be their undoing… this might make a good book. The ShawStank Redemption…can we get the cop guy from Breaking Bad to play stank?
