The time is now. JD can’t lead us competently. Here are 3 steps we can unionize to save what’s left:
Step 1: Organize and Build Support
- Form an Organizing Committee: Gather a small group of trusted colleagues who support the idea of unionizing.
- Educate Co-workers: Distribute information on the benefits of unionizing and address concerns to build wider support.
- Collect Signatures: Have workers sign authorization cards to demonstrate interest in forming a union. Aim for at least 30% of employees to sign.
Step 2: Connect with a Union and File for Election
- Choose a Union: Partner with a union that aligns with your needs, such as OPEIU or CWA, to gain resources and guidance.
- File a Petition: Submit the signed authorization cards to the NLRB to request a union election.
Step 3: Hold the Election and Negotiate a Contract
- Vote: Participate in the NLRB-conducted secret ballot election. If the majority votes in favor, the union will be certified.
- Collective Bargaining: Elect a bargaining committee to negotiate a contract with Nike management, covering wages, benefits, and working conditions.
- Ratification: Present the negotiated contract to union members for approval.
