Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

RTO lowers Productivity. Mic drop.

In the AI powered multiverse in which Al Gore invented, efficiency occurs by simplifying everything:

  1. Define vision of success. 2. Chart the course to the finish-line. 3. Arrive and celebrate the win.

Working remotely fits that structure. Work life balance lets people split time between work and personal.
With RTO, you add the complexity of a commute, the daunting task of collaborating with office dwellers who want you to solve their office and home problems. This introduces complexity.
RTO Focus:

  1. Work, what work? Charlie is having marital issues…
  2. You need to meet a deliverable? Let me put mine aside and show you how to use SharePoint. Who are you again?
  3. I am celebrating “living my designation” with snacks to make even more connections with people that will weigh me down.

Maybe let people “trial” WFH and compare their output against the RTO who get to work early to check email, pounce on others arriving after a lengthy commute to brag about getting here early, proceeding to block a path to a quiet (ha) drop in space and start doing the stuff that’d be already complete if I was in my own office. #ReThinkPossible

Stanley said it clearly: he wants young (and cheaper) blood. Well obviously that won’t happen till he gets rid of the “old” one, the “disable”, the “weak”, ..anyone that doesn’t look the cheap part, so he is hoping RTO will convince most people to quit. Doesn’t matter the knowledge, experience, loyalty, hard work … nope.

People that reserve desk area space and then don’t show up to occupy the desk after they make the reservation!
This leaves others having to continual look for an available desk to work from that is not ‘reserved’ or work from a cafeteria style table where everyone hears your work business and there is NO privacy!

The month I was hired by BellSouth in the late 80’s my building had just gotten remodeled from desks in a big open space to 5ft high wall cubicles with u-shaped desks and a file cabinet. Later CRE started down sizing the standard cube size until it got to no walls again. Just a workspace, not really a desk. They are so innovative it’s unreal! Gimme one of those solid huge 80’s reporters desk! 😂

Someone already said it but RTO is all about headcount reductions. Hoping people don’t like it and quit. And, now that it’s policy, if you are not in compliance, you can be fired. HR is hoping this strategy works as a way to avoid severance.

I feel bad for those retirement ready folks who are in the hub and did not have an opportunity to say NO to RTO. They don’t want to quit. They want to be paid to leave. It is a waiting game.

As a member of the first "wave", I voluntarily chose "not to follow the work."

Guess what: I got full severance, same as I would have had I been laid off the old fashioned way.

The emails from Stankey and Legg may have said "voluntarily" but the money says otherwise.

The open floor plan, arriving early for a desk only to be asked to move so teammates can sit together, trying to find a working monitor, having 3 people right in your face all day, wanting to swivel the chair to chime in on conversations going on around you but you’re not part of those teams. Going into that kind of office is just demoralizing. A cubicle of my own would make a world of difference even if it was just a 4x6 box.

RTO is not productive. All jobs are measurable. You are either doing it or now. If you are not, then you need to be in the office under your managers watchful eye. However, if you are doing it well there should not be a requirement. Working from home should be an incentive. When you are commuting in Atlanta or Dallas or any other large city for 1.5 hours each way, you lose productivity. My personal thought is RTO is being used to make older employees quit. Therefore, the company does not have to pay them a severance. Just an all together sad situation. But, Hi HO, HI HO, its off to the office i go...
