Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Tech is such a cluster f**k

Practially everyday I run into more and more things that highlight just how f**ked up tech has become. I'm amazed that we haven't had way more outages or security issues. Apart from the typical bureaucracy that has existed for years, there's various groups that have no processes defined, or standard solutions for things.

Tech leadership has utterly failed a leading-- and yeah this goes back to Saul.

Is tech product development? Eliciting and understanding the needs of the client and then developing a solution to deliver the product in a risk-free or risk-mitigated way? Or is tech maintaining the systems, keeping the lights on (KTLO), "fixing" previous agile installations, or adding features? Product development or product fixing?
I might be wrong here but when I look at Wells Fargo most of the "true" product development has come out of San Francisco -- "fargo" and mobile. In my double-digit years at this bank, I didn't see many of Marty Cagan's Empowered product teams (https://productstrategy.co/empowered-product-team/) run by real project managers. Rather I was on the KTLO maintenance, feature adding, "agile-like" product development in name only, teams managed by facilitators.
For current employees -- one part of upskilling, which I recommend, is to discover what true product development is about. Plan to be in one someday. For layoff, do everything not to get entrapped into a Feature adding/KTLO team -- especially if you are under 55.

We have had outages and issues, hence the recent code freeze and now, this heightened awareness

The offshore people are getting abused working 12 hour days. We offshored for cheap labor and human abuse. Of course they do it because they need the job, but seriously... How can anyone bank with WF?

By offshoring IT and leadership they have destroyed the company. Letting go all the top resources with the knowledge and dependencies the applications require are no longer known. Chainsaw Charlie has destroyed the entire company’s even more than the corrupt leaders of the past. With constant threat of layoffs, low raises, and terrible managers that never understand what you do for a living I can’t understand why the company su-ks.

By design. Destroy all. One firm at a time.

Tech looks like Mayhem guy from the insurance commercials, coupled with the Black Knight from Monty Python! A flesh wound indeed.

First step is admitting you are F’ed up. Endless nonsensical arguments deflecting culpability while claiming all is well, then more meetings to admire the problem while in a posture of, ‘if audit and risk would just leave us alone to do our jobs. ‘

Yes, a clusterf**k circus run by a non-tech ring master, hiring non-tech clowns. What could possibly go wrong?

And COSMIC still exists. Funny that it’s the only thing that still works around here. At this rate, it will outlive Config Management (replaced by Rings)

Never fear TK will save the day. She will conga into the room and blame others and make up some crazy story and tell us all how we should be growing lemon trees and watching her vacation and take boondoggle and how proud she is to be one of us….

Fu--ing endless "heightened awareness" and "hard freeze" periods. We're being set up to fail, y'all.

It says something about the whole of IT when tech employees only bond through gripe-sharing. There aren't any true team wins (successful deployments, projects with end users lauding, etc) or real individual merit-based accomplishments to rally around.

Failures of HR, bad business side dealings/fraud/etc, quality lacking executives, etc all play into the nonsense.

So why have I been here 20+ years? Until a few years ago, I was tuning out that noise, thinking it was healthier to put my head down and just work. It netted me zero despite many late nights, panic inducing outages and being a leader (w/o title or pay) to cover for the classic sub-average WF tech employee.

“ planned outages not communicated across organizations”

Even if every team sent out emails about planned outages, it doesn’t not mean that others understand how their app will be affected.

That understanding of interdependencies between systems is getting worse as those with institutional knowledge are leaving and being laid off.

Absolutely no communication between teams, planned outages not communicated across organizations, lack of tools and access to contribute, constant outages or slow downs with enterprise applications, absolutely no leadership to establish a vision, no goals or completely unrealistic goals, lack of motivation from most employees that is growing worse, no accountability for the complete lack of efficiency, constant changes with the Agile processes, constant management turnover, constant inconsistencies from the senior level revolving door and plenty more come to mind.

Don’t worry- the amazing updates around stability are going to solve all our problems. Sarcasm included. When tech is run by non-tech people and stuff is shipped overseas this is what happens. Good luck!
