Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

It started

Last week I started being pressured into doing the work of one of my former coworkers who was laid off. Not just me, but two more people on my team. This is in addition to our regular work. I need this job so while I managed to find my way out of it so far, I know it's only a matter of time before I have to do it. I hate being in this position. I wish I could just tell them to fu-k off and walk away.

One other comment on this thread. Those of you that are saying OP must not be good at managing their workload are revealing yourselves to be the real slackers because you have bandwidth to do an extra job. During my time at Nike it was common to work 50 hrs a week on a normal week and 60+ pretty often as well. I believe the majority of employees easily work over 40 hrs a week on a regular basis.

You folks remind me of the boomers telling millennials to just cut out their mochas and they’ll magically be able to buy a house. Completely out of touch.

I am surprised at many of these responses telling OP to su-k it up and such. As someone let go in the first phase I have no animosity towards anyone that is still there and frustrated about being asked to do more than their job to make up for all the ppl laid off.

Come on ppl - be better to each other. It’s not a contest about who has it worse. If it was, I’d say those of you still there that are now expected to add to your already full workload in a toxic environment have it way worse than I do being unemployed.

Those of you left should all resist being used by the company. They laid off a ton of ppl and now are using the fear that created to squeeze as much out of you as they can so they can increase profits for leadership & shareholders. You aren’t going to see some big raise from the savings they got nor will you get a nice pat on the back for ki-ling yourself trying to do 2+ jobs. Know your worth. They are lucky to have you, not the other way around.

OP - protect your sanity, health, and work/life balance. You do not owe them an extra pound of flesh and you’re not ungrateful (stupid sentiment anyway for work which is transactional relationship with no place for gratitude) for resisting doing two jobs while being paid for 1.

Ask your manager what the priorities are and timelines for completion. It will probably end with a few things coming off your plate. There are times when you will need to cover more than your share but holding your manager accountable for prioritization and direction is important. Also make sure you have a weekly meeting or email update to show where you are so they can gauge how long things realistically take as you absorb more. I managed a high performing team while there and remember piling on work that was being asked from Sr leaders and they were ki-ling it until one day they about crashed under the strain and let me know…it’s TOO Much! That’s when I knew to elevate the situation and let my leadership know what we would and wouldn’t be giving them from that point forward unless they gave me more headcount. Your leader can push back to their leaders to protect your team. You will need to keep them informed of how this all progresses. Today is probably a bit too soon to complain.

Tell your manager to gift you an apple watch, so that you have double the time

Oh really all those thumbs down related to the 5,days a week / 40 hours. Really? This platform is toxic as he-l. No one is getting better from negativity. Get back to work. You want the old day’s back (and I mean the good old day’s)…go and be part of creating it instead of wasting time here.

“Pressured into doing work” is a joke. You mean your boss assigned you a task? This is 101 stuff. Your job changes over time based on the needs of the business.

You either take it on or you don’t. If you don’t, you probably should have an explanation of why what you did is more important.

If your boss thinks you should be able to do both, show them why the thing you did took so long. If you are just refusing new work, it was a good run. You’ll be shown the door eventually.

This sounds like a problem managing your own workload. Try and pratice some time management skills.

Are you in the office 5 day's a week? Do you really work 40 hours? Are you efficient? Or are you spending most of your time on this platform?

Don’t do it, and then let them know later on that didn’t have time to get to it. If they push back, tell them an ETW will need to do it.
