Thread regarding Capital One layoffs

If you’re not in the clique or over 50, you’re done

I was laid off in November while I was STD leave, I was told that employees who were redeployed and applied for other Jobs in the company would be considered first. It happens that was simply a lie, I’ve applied for several positions all of which I was more than qualified for and never once did I even get considered. I later received calls and texts from others saying the same thing, a lot of people who were on STD were laid off and never considered for another position. It’s true if you’re not in the clique or over 50, you’re done. However if you are in a clique and are a manager you can literally commit fireable offenses against your own team members, lie and cheat, provide completely false information on mid year reviews and if you challenge that review like someone else said your wasting your time. Meanwhile the manger totally in the wrong quietly gets promoted and suffers absolutely zero consequences! It is a good company to work for if your in your 20-30’s, if your in your 40’s or 50’s no matter how well you do, “inclusion” is not meant for you!

When I was laid off, there was a “group” zoom meeting with HR that included everyone being let go during that cycle (sort of an off boarding call). All of those on the call (and there were about 30 of us) were “older.” There was not one youngish person on call except the HR person.

Here's a possibility.....you think too highly of yourself and you were let go because you couldn't be at best, average. It's so easy to come on this site and complain and blame others when in reality most should be looking in the mirror! Nexxxt!

If you ar 40 and older you are considering a protected class. Insurance premiums for older 40 plus workers are 3x that of workers in their 20s. That why companies fire older workers.

Look around and see who is being targeted (I.e., they are no longer there). It’s prob based on the 1984 book philosphy - mark older as a threat, brainwash next gen, which also means lower salaries and savings due to tenured employee layoffs. Had 18+ years of solid contributions and bo-m, now a low performer. In the end, could I have done more to possibly be relevant? Sure! There is always room for that but I also had the responsibility of helping mentor, driving programs to completion when leaders couldn’t and I spent time helping keep the lights on - my main lesson: don’t help others if you want to survive PM! That’s a horrible mode of thinking but it does fit nearly within PM structures. In the end, I appreciated my time and most of the people there and I’d say take the advice of what many have shared: if you are in your 20-30’s, keep raking in those leaves (cash and) and getting your self focused on what matters most (prob not a career); live lean and do not forgo advancing your skills / knowledge and treat jobs like your car insurance; every 6-12 months shop around and go through interviews!

I get it, I don’t like it but I get it -
