Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Wanna chat?

Hey all, I am a local reporter in Portland who covers Nike, and recently found this forum. First off, my sincerest apologies to all affected by Nike's restructuring. A reminder that YOU are worth more than your job, YOU have value outside of your labor and YOU will land on your feet.

Second off, if anyone would like to chat with me about their positions at the Swoosh, their layoff or anything in between, let me buy you a coffee. If nothing else, you get a free coffee and someone to vent to or reminisce with.

Nothing from our conversation will be on the record not will it be used in reporting without your prior consent. Feel free to email me at dlawrence@bizjournals.com. Or don't, it is totally up to you.

You may have had your differences with Nike but remember the good times and all that $ you have invested in the company’s stock from over the years.

Would a scandal and talking to a reporter (that tanks the stock price) really help your net worth?

Surprised no one is going to mention the (for legal purposes) ‘alleged’ RAT kick backs from vendors? How he ‘resigned’ after spending the entire technology budget for the year in the first half of the year while missing on both the scope and timelines of each of his key projects.

No more belly aching!

@yji if anyone thinks you’re just being cynical I can confirm, you’re not.

If you speak up at Nike your problem will usually be addressed. Then, as a consequence of having spoken up, YOU will be addressed. Either by losing your job, being denied promotions, or otherwise making your work life miserable enough until you quit.

Retaliation happens all the time at Nike. I’d even go so far, with no exaggeration whatsoever, as to say it’s the norm. I know this because I’ve known three people who spoke up about a problem, and three people whose careers at Nike got sidelined as a result.

If you are harassed, bullied, or in any other way illegally treated at Nike then practically you have two choices: either try to forget about it, or find another job. Because if you report it then it’s gonna cost you. Don’t you dare fall for the “You can safely report bad behavior” corporate line. Aside from just laying you off there are a million ways Nike can retaliate against you where it’ll be impossible to prove you’re being retaliated against.

Nike badly needs a truly independent, third party auditor to examine who filed complaints and what happened to those people. There’s a scandal there if any media wants to uncover it.

why don't you write about how consultants are ruining company looking at cutting short term costs instead of building a long-term brand... and when footwear news reports on it, Nike bullies and makes them edit and update the article so what was released is now redacted? Anyone else see that one?

Definitely find out how many over 50 were let go who were strong performers. I bet it’s a lot and likely open for lawsuits.

Look into retaliation for any HR or ER complaints. Every year we are asked to do a training on speaking up.

Do not speak up, there are consequences.

The Speak Up portal and emails to HR turn into a list of who to be layoff next. The submitters are the ones being cut. Bad employees and managers who did the damage are promoted.

You may want to take a look into the number of people with disabilities released as well as Nike’s overall treatment of them. Like buildings with no door openers, campus being so spread apart, 10 minute walks from parking to buildings inside the berm, ill treatment for those with chronic issues who have to miss work (MANY were laid off). They love marketing to people with disabilities but treat them like sh-t internally.

Look at the DEI metrics JD shared externally in 2020- aggressive goals for boosting #s on black and female leaders. Not judging. Just saying he won’t hit these goals, you’ll see his projected numbers w the a google search. He’s freaked out

Would love some research into the ageism issue (many, many 20+ years Nike veterans laid off) as well as the number of pregnant women and women who very recently gave birth. Both seem unusually high.

I would love to see a story about all the long tenured employees laid off. 20-30+ year employees laid off with no recognition. I am not one of them but my LinkedIn feed is full of these stories.

For your story: NKE is in a free fall. It’s a s&$t show and has been since JD took control in 2020 and brought a Bane mentality to cut costs, he’s minimized marketing, fumbled all his PR opps, floundered innovation all while being the insincere puppet consistent with his philosophy seen here: https://youtu.be/TZ2tgWPDk1o?si=QBs9r3hdqi4cfHkZ&t=1312
