Thread regarding Humana Inc. layoffs

Is a Union a viable solution?

Hey everyone, let's chat about why starting a union could be a game changer for us.

First off, power in numbers. When we negotiate together, we can ask for better pay and benefits, and have a louder voice on the things that matter to us.

Next, job security. A union helps protect us from unfair treatment or unexpected layoffs. We look out for each other.

Then there's work-life balance. Unions fight for reasonable hours and workloads, so we can have a healthy balance between work and personal time.

Also, unions push for fair treatment for everyone, no matter who you are or what your role is. It’s about making sure everyone is treated right.

And last but not least, being part of a union means being part of a supportive community where we all have a say.

So, what do you think? Is it possible?

It absolute ignorance some of you have around unions never ceases to astonish me. You’re living in a Jimmy Hoffa-Ronald Reagan fantasy. Sheesh.

No way. How does a union protect jobs when the revenue is reduced? That is all Humana needs right now, a union striking or pushing for higher wages, benefits and severance in a time when Humana needs to remain lean. And dont employees have to pay dues to a union who also speak for everyone? No thanks. See that bringing the company down as everyone is tied up in union negotiations to add costs to Humana's bottom line instead of fixing the business to generate more sales.

Do you drag this call for unionization on every bit of bad news. The Unions won't help you. The Unions will line their own pockets and they buy into whatever political party they can bribe into the best deal. Every time a union secures a better deal the customer pays the bill. Every time the Union negotiates you get promised jam tomorrow. Rather than join a Union but a few extra lotto tickets, you have more chance of coming out ahead.

Unionizing makes a lot of sense. Collective bargaining is the only way to negotiate with a giant corporation.

A union can’t protect you from a RIF—but it can negotiate for better severance.
It can negotiate for better pay, better bonuses, better PTO and other benefits. It can also help fight unfair treatment.

Also, Humana does NOT make employees sign any agreement saying they won’t Join a union. That would be illegal.

Kansas City Medicare market has had a nurse union for many years. They pay dues but when the region has RIFed in the past it hasn’t really protected anyone.

I have thought that for years, but I think you sign something at Humana when you hire in saying that you will not participate in or form a union. People that say “no” to unions have no idea the benefits or afraid that their profits will be affected. Unions made the middle class and they will save the middle class. Those that say “no” better hope they are in upper income classes. Those in the middle will not be immune to poverty if corporate greed, inflation, and medical/insurance costs continue to increase. We are very quickly heading to a 2 class society….rich and poor.
