Why do the executives need protection? This is anxiety-inducing to say the least.

@1xhr
I've had to travel to dangerous countries for work and have had security briefings with the ex-Mossad guy. He is a very nice person, very knowledgeable about security and situational awareness. Providing security to executives and all employees is routine and I'm happy these guys and girls are around. Nike receives constant threats even during the best days. I bet most are not credible, but probably a small number of them are.
Also reminds me of those Nike employees who were held hostage in Brazil.
What @1zad+1sineYK5 wrote in their post is 100% correct. Having security protection for executives is common at most large Fortune 500 companies, and it's not new at Nike.
There was a Zero article a few years back about one of Mark Parker's security guards, who was an ex-Mossad special forces commando. The content was tips about the things that every Nike employee should do when traveling, especially overseas. It basically came down to having situational awareness and making a hasty escape is you encounter potential dangers.
Executive employees are a target, and it's not just because of their compensation or the unpopularity of their decisions. If they can be compromised, they may give away important strategic information that could take down the company. For example, look at what happened to Nortel Networks:
https://globalnews.ca/news/7275588/inside-the-chinese-military-attack-on-nortel/
This is SOP for execs at his level. He may be beefing up security because of recent events but he has always had security. If you read the Annual Report it shows security and use of the jet as part of his compensation, su-ks to be him.
If I was laying off people and destabilizing a well established company - I would probably want someone watching my back. If I was back stabbing and throwing minions under the bus, definitely there would be a real need for armed guards. Those Dark Vader buildings need mounted guards too, wow! I would think
I use to work Nike Security....the little room in the bottom of Mia Hamm. Back in the MP days, when we signed Kapernick, they brought in an armed "contractor" to sit in the Cafe of Seb Coe....you know...just Incase. He was so out of place - I'm sure some people noticed his poorly concealed handgun.
Haha, consultants probably included those roles in the layoff…nobody noticed, and now JD realizes he needs them. Wait until this same story repeats for many roles.
Relax, OP. Private security for the most senior execs at Fortune 500 companies is entirely routine. In fact many insurance carriers require it. All the more so for a company like Nike that operates in 131 countries around the world.
BTW these very well-paying jobs are usually filled by ex-military or ex-government types. They work in government for 20 years, retire from government, then either do lucrative IC security work or - if they want more stability and usually less risk - corporate work. Almost all of them have seen some sh@t and are deservedly paid well for knowing how to deal with it.
I think the executives see all the elite athletes that come to visit all have their own private security (the best ones you don't even realize that's what they are) and got jealous. JD and his crew think they are at the same level of celebrity fame as the athletes they sign deals with.
If you need protection at your job and aren’t dealing with cash or valuables you are probably doing something wrong. Ask why someone would want to hurt you? Perhaps laying off thousands of people and driving the stock price down 50 percent might want to make ex employees and investors kick your a-s.
@1lej I’m not tracking on what you’re saying. No one in this thread is saying they would do anything. Thats a horrible thing to insinuate.
So you’d do it? Risk going to prison, losing all connection to your family? I mean to each their own… but work is just work. It’s not like he took your family away… I guess if worst comes to worst, potentially true if you have family who only married you for the money.
Who would want to work here. I know some people from security and it’s a very toxic environment.
I’d want it if I was responsible for taking away thousands of people’s livelihoods. People are unhinged.
Wasn’t there some SF Tech CEO ki-led a year or two ago when he was out running around town?
I hate JD but I don’t wish anyone to inflict harm on anyone else.
They’re not high profile politicians. I think they’re fine. And if there’s a credible threat, they should be beefing up security for EVERYONE. Not just hiring their own secret service team.
Relax John, not everything has to turn to a lecture moment, yes, executives need protection at all times, and people can still joke and make fun of it.
I would think/hope most exec's at a company worth as much as Nike would have protection. I don't attribute it to the recent activities, but more along the lines of people come up with some wild ideas & we should be proactive. Wasn't there a kidnapping plot against the governor of Michigan a couple years ago? Or someone attacked the author Salman Rushdie on stage recently? Lots of weirdos out there.
lol, they're scared of us, probably does not accept former employee's application.
This place su-ks
Because the executives including but not limited to JD, CTO etc have likely gotten credible threats of bodily harm. Not only have they destroyed a once great company but fired many long term employees in a very cold way. JD is probably concerned he might actually lose a pound of flesh. Piece of shi*
Sounds kind of cool!
