Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

"That zoom call marked the end of my 38+ years as a Nike employee"

Not my story but just saw the post in Linkedin.

Seriously Nike? this person should get a medal and maybe a building in her name, not a Zoom Call to end a career. We can do better. Hopefully, sooner than later, true leadership will make things right and give this person the recognition that she deserves.

Yeah, some respect and recognition would be nice for this and other similar cases. Also, severance is the same with 38 or 20 years of service. Doesn’t seem fair.

I know two people tenured people one who was pushing 35+ years and another close to 30.

The 35+ one was impacted a few cycles ago, super nice person very personable but the work has passed them by. I don’t think they ever had any intentions of retiring which is a testament to who they are but in my department they were reserved to light task. The new leadership ended up severancing them, I was pretty sad about it but I think this was probably the best situation for them. If they had retired on their own, they wouldn’t have gotten a massive package that they gotten. Sure it’s probably unexpected but I can’t imagine they weren’t prepared for this moment.

For the other tenure person, every cycle they hope to get let go and never do. They basically are disgruntled at this time and have been for the past 8 years. Financially they can probably retire early but are hoping someone to show them the door. They also have no intentions leaving. They’ve told me several times, I really hope I get let go.

So make of it what you want, everyone’s story is different. The only difference is we get to know them and go through some of the same trenches.

After a long tenure, it’s not a bad way to leave. By this time, you surely have 25x annual spending saved, a plan, and are close to or exceeded Medicare qualifications. Getting a nice 100-200k severance is a solid way to end it, and you can still come back as ETW in a year or so. I think the OG wanted some respect, but this is 2024 — the companies don’t want to get sued

You do realize it's a favor? 40 years is close to retirement. A great package and healthcare. I wish it were me.

I know and have worked with the woman you’re referencing. Very talented, hardworking and one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. Nice job JD, HON and MM.

Nike clearly benefits by sweeping out gifted employees that have given so much to the company. You couldn’t have at least offered her an early retirement option a few months ago? Ugh. Heartless and stupid.

Not the first time that has happened.

A few years ago another Nike employee who had been here for almost four decades was unceremoniously shown the door. No ceremony, no retirement party, not even a freakin’ email to the rest of the department acknowledging this person’s very long service to Nike.

That’s the company you work for, peeps. Forget it at your own risk.

If that doesn’t tell you everything you need to know about this company…

Ugh, these clowns took nearly 5 months and couldn’t dedicate a bit more time to honor someone that dedicated nearly 40 years of their life to Nike. This is just further evidence that we don’t matter, we are nothing more than disposable resources. Because JD & his posse of clowns made horrific & stupid decisions great people like her pay for it. Not really sure how that D-bag JD shows his stupid face on campus ever again.
