Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

How is the AppSec working environment?

I am considering taking a position in WF application security. Does anyone have insight into the working environment in that group?

If you need income, join and look around. If you don’t like what you see, move on. Quickly. At a nice salary premium. Alas, something is rotten in the state of Denmark. 0.02

In a forum like this you are going to have a strong skew towards complaints. Keep this in mind. I'm a developer and I like our appsec people and the tools they use. They seem a bit slow on implementation, but they are rolling out integrations with our CI/CD tools. I'm sure they do a lot more than this but this is the only part I see. Also keep in mind several thousand layoffs are pending so a lot of people are pi---d. The IT staff is spread across dozens of locations and they cutting regardless seniority or how critical your role. The process is very slow and they clearly are hoping some will leave on their own. The locations have been earmarked but they have given us all a two year window. 950m was expenses for this effort. It is a horrible way to treat people. Few married adults who have existing mortgages are interested in relocating to crowded housing markets when your house is paid off or you have sub 3% rates. Every two weeks with we get "town hall" lectures on the great job we are doing yet the layoff train keeps moving on. Management messages like sleazy politicians blowing smoke up your pipe.

Scan the board looking at today’s new topics posted to see how much of a joke the tech leadership here is.

If the money is right and you're willing to step into a totally messed up and dysfunctional world, go for it. Security has taken a hit with people leaving/laid off and some new people. If you have a clue about things, it would be great to have somebody b/c many of the infosec people I've worked with are so obsessed with some things yet don't get realities of modern architecture, cloud etc.

If you're ok with just saying no to everything, making excuses or not making any decisions you'll fit right in.

It's ironic to see comments about being a white male. Most of what people have to work with was exactly that and all minorities ended up getting the boot. Because one poor manager's decisions and insecurities, almost a whole team got axed. The same manager cried acting a fool when he was the exact reason why that employee had to be let go. And get this, that was a tenured employee of almost 10 years who just lost a family member. These managers don't care. Don't ruin your career here and go with a more stable security program elsewhere. Plus, no program should be so emphasized on metrics and quantity. Quality also matters, so do actionable insights. There's enough insight on here to reject the role and find greener pastures elsewhere.

I work in AppSec at WF. No, their program is broken, stay away. They are cutting people left and right. Go somewhere else to a smaller company you'll learn much more, vs being a scan setter here.

Unless you are one month away from being homeless then stay away from technology here. Not only will you be treated like a third class citizen, but you will be working under a tech management that is the joke of the industry.

If you are a white hetero male this company will not be good for you. They constantly send reminders about how much they hate us

The first responder isn’t wrong but I would disagree with the Red Tape complaint. It’s called Change Management/Change Controls and because it’s new to Wells on the whole all employees do is complain about it. The grandfathered in days of the Wild West do whatever you want are gone.

I would not recommend taking any position in any group here currently. If you have to just to have gainful employment then so be it. But Wells is completely unstable and will remain that way for the next full calendar year if not year and half.

Don't recommend. Go on Indeed. Find the company. Find their older company profile too. Search "information" or just "security" and see how many times they have renamed their roles. Lots of attrition, nepotism, and biases and lack of support. Throw under the bus behavior and lack of quality in terms of work. Quantity everything. Too much red tape. The brand died. They throw away employees like trash and will do the same to you.

If you need a role, take it and bounce to something better after a year. Stay under the radar because lame management will do what they can to ruin your prospects elsewhere. They often fail though, and who knows, you could walk away with your bosses bonus.

YMMV. Make an analysis off of several data points. Indeed, Glass Door, forums, news articles, people you know. Good luck.
