Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

100% Exception Request Denial Rate

Just had a conversation with my manager where I was told point blank that 100% of all exception requests would be denied for my entire business unit.

I asked a couple follow ups:

  1. What is the rationale for a complete denial?
  2. Why even offer exceptions at all if they are all going to be denied anyway?

My manager was not able to answer or elaborate on either question, I am imagining that most PLs (unless they are director level or above) are just being told their directives with zero explanation, even though we all know it's a combination of forcing attrition, st-----g the fragile egos of control freaks, and bailing out the corporate real estate industry as a whole.

I like my immediate manager and team, but have completely lost all trust in the senior leadership of this company, a new role cannot come soon enough.

Ditto that post plus — boomer corp execs will not retire b/c they have no life or relevancy outside of the "office." This stagnates career growth for younger generations. With remote and/or hybird, folks can build a life outside of the office with real relevancy and real relationships - not illusory office relationships. Retirement would be eagerly taken so the next generation can move up. Real communities would grow not the fake office campus kind.

"The ballot where The Board recommends how you should vote for a number of things, ex. Stockholder proposal requesting changes to the Executive Compensation Program...board recommends "against""

Needless to say I am voting the opposite of everything the Board recommends down the line.

Fireside chat was performative to serve only two purposes:

  1. Chuck’s proof-of-life
  2. Figuratively “bless” the next CEO

"Why did Chuck speak about being in the office? Was he asked the question or did he casually raise it?"

Rick asked him about culture — and then he went on a rant about everyone needing to be in the office b/c that's how to maintain the culture built at Schwab, he's a workaholic which (from my take) is what everyone should be. Also did a capitalist semi-rant b/c yes, he's a billionaire.

All the offices are fairly full….
Let’s stop with the HWF requests now that we are back, and have remote days and weeks available to us.
The exception request process isn’t needed as it’s a waste of time. If a PL wants to manage a situation, do it like prior to Covid… not this silly process that’s costing millions of overhead (yes, million$). So sad.

Ah yes. A selfish look at one tree and completely missing the forest.

There's no reason for each employee to come into the office. Even three days a week is comparable to an 8% pay cut per $100,000. No one got an 8% raise. All bonuses were cut. In prior years the total of all raises did not replace inflation.

We shouldn't be asked to come in without some benefit to us or the company. And any company benefit should be accompanied by compensation at least equal to our prior wages. If we don't have the money to keep wages at 100% YOY then we should close locations and use the savings and proceeds.

Worse, we have the infrastructure for WFH and are paying to maintain it. It's a waste to not use it. And we have to retain it for the next pandemic.

And then there's macro issues. We can't hire in some regions because of housing and availability of applicants. We lose talent. And the planet just past the point where arctic permafrost is a net emitter of greenhouse gasses and we are tracking for the warmest year ever, again. We hit 110 last year and it was miserable. Well, more miserable. Is driving into the office worth it for millions of workers spending their own money and time to make it worse, or, at least, not better?

There's also quite a few not coming in who don't have exceptions. The offices may be fuller, although I don't see it, but they aren't 100% and couldn't support it if everyone came in.

So we have your misleading claim and shilling advocacy that everyone should pull trousers down to their ankles and bend. Or we can be smart employees focused on what matters. And hearing Chuck talk about being in the office? Zero credibility. Think that's wrong? Search for how Walt gives Chuck a weekly summary of the company.

Chuck was brought out of storage to bless the ascension of RobotoRick. If Chuck likes him maybe everyone else will.

Probably all the chatter on here, and all the chatter of, where has Chuck been...bring Chuck in to talk since no one had heard from him in a while, per feeds on here. What better way to try and calm the masses then hearing it from Chuck himself, if that is what happened. Read: Chuck supports this, so should you is the messaging.

Just finished a pointless day followed by a pointless commute of equally pointless commuters.

Tomorrow and Friday are sick of work days and I’m going to enjoy a four day weekend.

There is no data supporting it. Folks working in this space have been reading the data for years and it speaks nothing to what Schwab is saying. Brian Elliott does alot of work in this space, and with companies, talking about distributed workforces, the data (and loads of it), and how to support distributed teams, and when it makes sense to come together...starting with "built upon trust."

I just want to see the data showing improved X by being in the office.

Cuz I see a lot of negatives.

The option will be five day RTO when it happens. No reason for them to slow walk.

To be expected.

We’d been told there’d be no new approvals and people should seek medical exceptions.

There will be four or five day RTO as well. I’d expected a whisper by now but haven’t heard when or which option.
