Thread regarding Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) layoffs

Should I sue?

I was laid off 2023. But before that, I stumbled upon "private" slack channel in which some other HPE employees from another team, which I interacted with a lot, were talking sh-t about me and about some other team members. Some of the comments were racist.

I kid you not, this affected my performance to some extent. I was a bit agitated in later meetings. And bit a chunk of my loyalty to the company, specially when my managers did nothing about it when I told them about that slack channel. I ended up apologizing for my agitation in one of the meetings, but no one apologized to me. It was simply swept under the rug.

This is a true story.

Would that be grounds for suing HPE?

It’s an art to know when to proactively move on from even a good job if the work environment has become toxic. An art to recognize when issues won’t pass and it will only hurt you and your attitude if you stay. Putting up with sh!t behavior from coworkers for 16 months hoping it will improve is too much. Life is short and there are better places to work.

Every single year, every HPE employee has to do the stupid Standard Business Practices classes. One of those classes is about zero tolerance for harassment.

OP, did you report the slack channel to the harassment hotline? If you did and they did nothing, yeah, maybe talking to a lawyer might be a next step.

If you didn't report it, why the he-l not?

Give example of "racist" -- what exactly did they say, and who said it? I'm sure every big company gets a handful of these suits every year and they know how to discourage the plaintiff's lawyer by causing hundreds of hours of work for at best little reward. So, how racist, for how long, and how widespread -- that's going to be the key.

It did hurt. And I was sad and depressed because of what happened. And what added to my misery is that no one apologized to me, but I was the one who ended up apologizing for be slightly agitated during that one meeting after having read their racist comments.

This behavior lasted for more than 16 months. And it did contribute to a hostile work environment. I once, assigned a long standing ticket to that other team. And my manager messaged me on slack when he took note of that seemingly annoyed that I did that. I think in his mind thought that I am playing some sort of work place politics when I did that. When in reality, I was just being honest. I wanted them to take a look at that ticket, either do something about it or close it.

And yes, that channel was on HPE's corporate slack deployment. So, it was run, sponsored and managed by HPE.

And, I am not talking sh-t about them. I am simply telling my story.

Probably best to seek proper legal advice and base your decision on that.

Did it cause you mental or emotional stress? If so then sue.

Was the slack channel was sponsored by HPE? for example on HPE paid server or access to slack paid for by HPE? a corporate slack account perhaps.

You thought coming here talking sh-t about them was somehow different than them talking sh-t about you? Nice.
