Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

Offer from Medtronic and BSC. Is Medtronic Avoid at All Costs?

Received offers from both companies in the Twin Cities. Medtronic's offer has a base salary 24% higher with 5% higher annual target bonus. (MDT offer is for 1 grade higher)

Have heard great things about the Boston Scientific culture at these sites and read some horror stories on here about some of the Medtronic challenges ongoing. A new campus and ongoing growth is happening for Boston Sci in the cities.

Boston isnt willing to match (given the pay grade differences offered) but will offer sign on bonus of $10k.

Is Medtronic kinda a avoid at all costs? Not living paycheck to paycheck, the additional pay will basically go towards savings/investments.

You made the correct decisio! Medtronic culture has completely gone down hill and if they haven't already RIFed the best talent the talent is now looking to leave because everyone is over worked and lack of resources and red tape for ridiculous bill back model with IT.

What OU or function at MDT was the role?

Thank you all for the input, after some further discussions within team members of the BSC team, I plan to accept an offer from them once some negotiations are finalized as I got a really good feeling all around about their culture, flexibility, and perspective of local and company leaders.

The MDT team seemed to have great people but constantly referenced being understaffed and stretched as their biggest current challenges. They have not been RIF impacted and don't expect to be. I have chased money in roles in the past that have burnt me and hope to get back into an atmosphere and team that enjoys taking on challenging project while also being supported and resourced appropriately.

If coming to MDT, keep in mind (as others stated) that this company burns out their young, talented professionals and then lets them join competitors. Meanwhile, the same leaders who got us into this mess face no repercussions for their poor strategic decisions and continue to drive us into the ground. For proof of this, look no further than our head-head finance performance vs other med device companies.

MDT “bonus” is a scam. It never gets paid out in full and they never divulge the true formula over how MIP is paid out. Incredibly unethical and misleading incentive.

I worked at both companies at very senior levels for many years. You will have more career success at Boston Scientific. CEO MM at BSX is living proof of a turnaround. CEO GM at MDT is living proof of a turn down. There are many reasons for both, but the simple answer are the 3rd and 4th sentences above.

If your job is software or application related just be aware that IT at Medtronic is disorganized, dysfunctional, hard to work with, and very slow to respond. The GSO ( Global Security Office is the name they went by when I was there) will try to interject itself into every project you're working on and will slow you down further. Medtronic's approach to security is years behind with arcane practices and arbitrary rules depending on who you get stuck working with. Not all people are bad there, but those in leadership positions tend to squash anyone they see as a threat to their ladder climbing pursuits.

MDT. Higher base is worth it.

BSci will most likely match your base if you choose to leave in a few yrs.

It really depends on your group.

I have interviewed with Boston Sci and their managers are horrendous. Seriously flawed people. I saw them hire a complete mo--n I worked with to manage 15 people. He was a laughing stock. I interviewed twice and the people were beyond terrible.

I've seen lots of bad at MDT too.

None of these companies are in general good or bad. The trick is to find a good position/team within one of them.

Don’t forget Medtronic is too busy moving jobs out of MN to other states or countries while BSX is busy expanding their presence in MN. They’re only showing you the good side of MDT right now — I would avoid.

Go to Boston. MDT used to be great, but is going down the sh----r and your job security is little to none. I say this as someone that actually has to work on the layoffs happening all the time. until MDT changes CEO, it will continue this way. BSX on the other hand, is on the way up.

There are good pockets within MDT and businesses that are growing and will continue to grow.it definitely depends on where you’re going. The company isn’t going to collapse anytime soon.
The downsides: the C level leadership’s lack of strategy and poor planning. Everything moves very slowly. Many manual tasks because of lack of modern IT infrastructure (ie, working out of spreadsheets instead of systems). Also, while there are a lot of comments here about DEI, I find it to still be a very male dominated, s-xist environment where men are promoted on potential and women are only promoted after proof.
My two cents!

Unfortunately there is missing information to provide an advise. Info like what busineess unit, what type of role would help. This info impacts bonus and potential future opportunities. Bonus is based on many metrics. Bsx is much easier to get promoted. If you are on track for promotion in 2 years in BSX, how will your decision change?

I would recommend BSX. I never worked there but have other companies and this place is in decay, lost, unwilling to hear it at upper management and will quietly punish you if you speak the hard truths. Don't get me started on the band wagon social contagion agendas garbage they push over competency for moving up. There is more suffering to come for this place.

Don’t make my same mistake. I’m surprised BSX didn’t offer more. I received an offer from both BSX and MDT back in 2021. BSX offer was much higher, but MDT agreed to match, so I chose MDT. BSX has a better company outlook overall.

Medtronic has veered hard toward a “DEI/Woke” culture under the current CEO. Not even close to the company it used to be. Hard to turn down 30% higher comp though.

Go for the MDT offer. It’s not nearly like anything these whining babies claim it to be. If you’ve a good brain in your head, can think on your feet and know what you’re doing, there’s tons of opportunity at MDT. Don’t listen to the deadwood who post here regularly.

FYI, Medtronic hasn't paid close to the target bonus at all in last few years plus it's been constantly laying off

Depends on how much you need the money. If you want a long term play, go Boston. Medtronic is a dumpster fire. Literal layoffs and reorgs every year. Stock price hasn't moved in five years. On a daily basis it feels like you are working at a dollar store with how cost conscious they are, and now it's biting them in the keester. Forget MIP.... Hasn't hit in three years, and your annual raise will only be 2%
