Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

I too wrote my congressman about the data leak. I thought it’d get trash canned and certainly not hear a response. I was surprised to get a reply. It seems that the congressional office is also not too pleased since some of them or their families are also affected.

I’m encouraging my family and friends to drop AT&T and go to Verizon. A buddy of mine is a techie guy. He too got his info leaked as a result of AT&T negligence and lying about it. He’s starting up an anti AT&T webpage that’ll have a blog post section, a section discussing any class action law suit, a section detailing how to contact both your district representative and senators for your state and of course links to other cell carriers to choose from in it.

Yes, they should be heavily fined for lying if nothing else, then there’s the HUGE number of people affected.

Given the scope of the exploit a nice 2 billion $ fine would get the point across.

I hope AT&T gets sued and fined into oblivion.

The only thing that will make a change is a severe punitive fine. A fine of 50 million is laughable. AT&T would call a fine of 50 million, “Tuesday”. The fine needs to be substantial enough to where it consumes at least a few quarters of profit. It’d be from that point, things will change.

I'm conflicted about this. On one hand, I agree, the punishment needs to be meaningful. Equifax lost all our data, and their execs even sold stock and jumped ship while they were keeping this info hidden for a few months, and other than a relatively small fine, nothing happened to them. T's leadership needs to feel the pain for this. Heads must roll, all the way to the top, but...

On the other hand, we all know what would happen. T will just lay off a bunch more of us, well you guys, I've already been laid off. They will pay a small fee, it's all for show, just creates an illusion of accountability. Affected customers will get $5 from this, if they're lucky. And after a year or two, everyone will forget it ever happened, just like everyone seems to forget about Equifax now.

My sister is totally upset as she has had multiple identity thefts and gone to great troubles to fix it.

AT&T needs to come up with some other way to identify their customers rather than SSN and\or drivers license. If they can’t safeguard the personal data, which clearly they can not, then they need to come with some other means for identification. Yes, I know its an insurmountable task but that’s not my problem. My problem is with AT&T letting my data get uploaded to the dark web under their watch and of course with them lying about it.

For whatever its worth and it may bear no fruit, I’ve already suggested to my state senators, district representative, and various other cyber security oversight committees in congress with these suggestions. I know they may take my suggestions to the recycle bin never to be seen but maybe not. It does not hurt to try.

I've used AT&T for the past 16 years, and yet I got 0 emails, mail or any credit monitoring alerts about this. Not sure if this should make me more worried or not.

You guys are gonna love it even more when you find out this data was stolen almost 5 years ago, we just now learned about it.

More strict fines should be put into place. This would encourage companies, out of fear of being fined hundreds of millions, to up their game on increasing security instead of meeting the government standards which is always light years behind.

There are class action suits over this data breach. While AT&T currently offers 1 year credit monitoring, those class actions might yield a better settlement.

I already have overlapping credit monitoring and identity theft insurance from the Equifax breach, so, so far I'm not seeing anything from AT&T on how to settle this matter.

Reviewing the AT&T deal, my advice would be to make sure that there is no fine print that would result in the claimant not being able to participate in a class action if one accepts their settlement.

Look at the situation. AT&T denied that the breach came from their databases for years, and now that they figured out that it has come from their databases, they want to unilaterally determine the settlement? I think a neutral third party (court) should decide the settlement.

My SS# was also found on the dark web from the ATT leak. I just froze my credit at all 3 reporting agencies and changed by ATT and email passwords. Thanks John and Jeremy!

The worst part is that AT&T denied it happened, either because they did not know or were flat out lying. Only after someone showed T the data did they admit it had happened. That is the culture Stankey is building!
