Thread regarding Enbridge Inc. layoffs

Were the layoffs handled appropriately?

Is there a way for Enbridge to do this better? Having people let go with no chance to connect or say bye to colleagues- feels sad. But is this preferred by those leaving? Just curious to know how people felt with the option to work from home while this happened.

No. Announcing it early created so much disruption and anxiety, and very few poor performers were laid off.

VWO was done to encourage self selection. It's more costly, with sweeter payouts. If you want to do 650, you don't make it voluntary.

VWO was a better model but this one comes in second IMO. I had a lot of jobs and headhunters waiting on me to call them back, even though I made it through the layoffs.

I dont get why they didn't do VWO for this one. There was a shitload of people who applied for the last VWO and were rejected, a lot of whom I heard ended up getting walked out the door anyway during this layoff.

But still, as someone who still has options to make moves, I appreciated the 30 day notice. allowed me to move into the big day with a plan and a priority list of where my next steps would be.

No, there's no good wayt. So evaluate it by the simplest terms.

  • Were people compensated reasonably?
  • Did they provide outplacement services / opportunities for benefits bridging?
  • Were they neutral in delivery?

If those things are met within reason, all else is just fluff, and you evaluate it based on how much your feelings got hurt. Quit worrying about it.

Nope. Said there was no voluntary layoff. I’ve now heard of numerous people that put their hand up and were chosen to go.
Also I would say at least 2/3 were older retirement age individuals that got the golden ticket.
But not me.

This might be true before but not in modern times, company usually have a list if names forwarded already to IT to cut off all access at a certain date and time.

So even if you carry your laptop out of the building or smash it in your desk, it’s just a hardware and you can’t really access any company data anymore.

Not sure though what would be a balance way to do layoffs and Enbridge should really look into their policy since they do layoffs every year since 2015. It’s nice if they get more sophisticated for the next round of layoffs LOL

There is not really the best way to do this and the reason that this is done is not to disrespect people but it’s more for security purpose.

Even in the past couple of years if they layoff someone in person they get called into a meeting with their people leader and HR and they are not allowed to go back to their desk. This is to avoid anyone still doing something with their computer in a potentially harmful way. It’s better to avoid it than deal with the mess after. Same reason as someone gets escorted out of the building. I heard this last layoff people were asked to wfh and notices went out via emails.

I am not saying someone would actually compromise the company’s computer or other assets but there are cases in the history of layoffs that someone actually did. You’ll never know what someone is thinking.

I don’t think there’s better either once you start down this path. In an ideal world you tell people they are done, they come back in for a few days, pack up their stuff, wrap a few things up and say their good byes. But that’s just too good to be true, would work in the 95 percent or cases but that other 5 percent could be bad, really bad.

There is no good way of laying off employees. To have emotional goodbyes is extremely difficult on everyone. Contact your work mates once you are ready by text, email, etc.

When I was laid off in 2017, I was frog marched out of the building and not allowed to say goodbye to anyone. I was told to leave my belongings at my desk and I could come back to get them on the weekend under supervision of an HR Rep.

Handle poorly.

They had clearly said it would be handled with respect and I also believe it was mentioned people would have a chance to say goodbye. They Infact did not get that chance
