Thread regarding Humana Inc. layoffs

Employer Staff

If Humana is in such a pinch financially, why have they continued retaining Employer Business Directors, Associate Directors, etc.? Help me understand how that is contributing to administrative efficiency.

Or they promote associate directors to director, who shouldn't have even been associate directors.

Middle management is a necessary mostly. Epically in IT where business value needs to be aligned so two separate teams aren’t doing the same work (but it does occasionally happen).

With that said there is absolutely a need to cut down, I’ve seen managers report to other managers on the same level, it doesn’t make any sense.

It seems like senior and lead devs (from the IT side) were let go in the previous RIF’s, I’d imagine redundant AD’s and Directors are next.

Span of control? They are just using corporate fluffy speak to try to justify their position. This is common among leaders at Humana. The entire paragraph is designed to make you think your feelings are wrong. Guess what - you’re not wrong in thinking there are too many layers upon useless layers of people who do not do very much. The ones that are sandwiched in between the doers and the decision makers should be concerned.

It I was good for a long time. People were paid and promoted and told they were the best of the best that’s why they were made a leader. Turns out, everyone is the same - expendable during volatile periods.

There is such a thing as span of control requirements at Humana. If a leader is under a threshold of direct reports they are likely being told to correct. Targeting a title and blindly saying they need to go is a lot. Humana created multiple levels of leadership roles not long ago and that allows a gradual progression and more focused role definition. Yes, a manager can report to a VP but so can a lead role. A manager's scope is localized to leading a team. An associate director interacts across areas and may have managers. Directors are strategic roles. No longer do we have only a very small number of management roles that cover a very very wide range of responsibilities and pay range. I for one like the fact if I choose to be a leader it is not as difficult to jump up the ladder and not have to make a huge jump from manager to director. With everything I am sure there are exceptions here at Humana where the leader is not pulling weight or needed.

Right I’ve seen manager report directly to VP . All these directors and associates directors need to go . Half of them don’t do anything or don’t know what they are doing.

Asking the real question right here. Soo much fluff in the middle.
