Got laid off today. Should I file unemployment today or in May, considering we're paid through May?

It depends how they pay severance
If lump sum, file as soon as off payroll (you can even apply a couple days before then).
If they pay in installments, you may have to hold on unemployment but confirm with you local dept
PS: I can also confirm that poster @ejt is incorrect. In Oregon you can collect unemployment even if you received severance. Good thing too because in some states you can’t collect unemployment benefits until your severance runs out. Again Oregon is not one of those states.
Everything @lov wrote is correct, with some additions.
You do have to verify your identity for unemployment benefits but it can be done at any post office. Likewise, you are required to enroll with WorkSource Oregon and take their skills assessment. You’ll also need to schedule an intake interview with them. But all of this can now be done online. Aside from the identity verification at a Post Office you don’t have to physically go anywhere or see anyone in person, although that option does exist if you just want to go that route.
They also randomly select people for a second intake or “check in” interview a few weeks later, and in my case when I got a letter telling me I had been selected the interview had to be completed within 72 hours. Since the first available online interview slot was 2 weeks out I had to quickly hustle to a WorkSource Oregon location and do it in-person. Where they freely acknowledged the glitch of people sometimes getting letters with unreasonable timelines, including some people getting letters saying they had to complete the second interview BEFORE the date they even received the letter!
The people who work at the Employment Department and WorkSource Oregon (two separate but related agencies) are nice people but they aren’t the most well organized. I often got the sense that they were all trying to do their best within an agency that had significant issues.
If any of this applies to you you’ll get emails and letters explaining how all of it works. It’s not as overwhelming as it may sound. Oregon wants to ensure that people on unemployment should be on it and that means there’s a certain amount of bureaucracy you have to deal with. I think they learned some valuable lessons during COVID but are still trying to sort things out.
Laid off in December here. You file unemployment the first week you are off payroll. If they gave you 60 days notice meaning you are on payroll for 60 days but access cut today, you have to wait until the 60 days is up because you’re technically still employed.
You also have to go into an oregon wage works office and do an identity verification and skills assessment and nothing online explains that. First week is a waiting week, so you won’t be paid. Second week you will be.
You CAN file and collect unemployment during severance as severance is paid in a lump sum. I am doing it, the other commenter is wrong. You just can’t do it while you’re technically still on payroll.
Lastly the phone call line is real long but there is a hack on their chat : after you file select “update” application and “no” and it connects you to a human in like 10 mins vs 6 hours on hold.
File or contact them to determine when you file unemployment benefits. No one here should be giving you advice.
@ejs not true in Oregon
When you are off Payroll
need this answer too. yall please answer this question if you have the info rather than asking us layoff info (there are other threads for that)
Sorry to hear. You can only start getting unemployment once your severance runs out. Have been through one before and that’s what I had to do.
Sorry for you bro … Which team and What was your level ? How were you contacted ?
When do fsa funds expire.. end of Feb or end of May?
