REAL QUESTION - High Fives - did they ever really matter

Hi friends. I’m between hurdler and decathlete in my time inside the berm

As I wait for my fate this week, really want to know did high fives from people senior to me ever matter?

I know what some of you will say, just feeling reflective as I watch my inbox.

Yes, a High Five matters. For the person getting it, and also shows class to the person who took the time to give it.

Does it matter in a lay off. Absolutely fu--ing NO. The VP/Senior VP 3 rungs up has zero visibility to them.

ETW here. HF matters to us because this feedback goes to an FTE manager usually that pays the bills, he acknowledges you, replies with "you rock" and deletes the email.

After 50-60 HF you will do 1 thing wrong and none of those HF matter anymore, he will wipe the floor with you in front of everyone since you're ETW and not pure blood FTE

They’ll high five you out the door, if that’s what you’re asking. Remember, you’re just a number on a piece of paper.

They don’t matter. Don’t be d-mb. If your year end rating doesn’t matter, if your maxim nomination doesn’t matter, why would you ever think that a pretend high five mattered?

High Fives are essentially the same thing you get in a group meeting, where someone calls you out for having done something helpful or good. It increases your social and political capital, which employees can use for their advancement.

Do they translate to anything concrete with advancement? Probably not, but that doesn't mean they're worthless.

High fives are an official & public thank you to someone who helped you. Nothing more, nothing less.

It’s a system that would be ruined if it was used for anything official, as there’d be an arms race in friends thanking friends for the most pointless of things.

They matter. They are recognition. They are points on a score board to save your job. That determination was made with different factors in mind. Pay. Level. Role. Need for your role. Who your leadership is or will be etc. High fives still matter just as being kind to each other still matters. Regardless of business decisions, however harsh, that are made.
