Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Budgets, Operational Changes & Layoffs

The belt continues to tighten! Summary of a few operational changes across a few orgs.

Been told by a reliable source that C&E budgets have been reduced by 20%. They have to make up the shortfall by completing cable reclamation projects on dead or vacant cables and adding the recycled cable profits back into their budgets. Management will prioritize these projects instead of focusing 100% on building the network out, for future growth. If they are unable to make up the budget, it could result in more layoffs. The ordering of materials and supplies will be scrutinized more than previously, for most orgs.

AFO - 40% of Install & Maintenance (I&M) and Wire techs schedules have been changed to 10A-7P. Supposedly to meet customers needs but in reality it’s to reduce OT because the company can force OT as needed. Air pressure schedules have also been adjusted to 8-5pm. There has been org changes, with more to come.

Building Services/CRE also has their budget cut, most are now contractors since, last year. Expect more of the same or worse, especially in the CO’s. Little to no restroom supplies, very little cleaning (bugs are our friends), bulbs not changed and secondary/backup HVAC systems not repaired or replaced. There will be more dynamic temps ranges to save cost, hotter in the summer and cooler in the winter. Any nonessential issues won’t be addressed or repaired.

CNIO workforce and management has continued to shrink. There has been attrition and a hiring freeze for almost 2 years. There has been a convergence of AM’s from DEG and the CO’s. The support center ET’s have been reduced with whole groups involved in layoffs. The CO 4-wall ET’s over the years have been reduced to skeleton crews, the majority of techs are covering multiple offices, many offices are unmanned now. The workforce is aging and many are close to retirement and will be gone in 2-5 yrs. It takes years to be competent at the position, unsure of the companies plan for replacements. They are rapidly decommissioning the legacy copper network and expect it to be reduced by 50% at the end of 2025. Fiber projects are continuing along, with new fiber orders.

5ESS and DMS TDM switches are barely being maintained, they recently turned off the ticketing systems for all but the critical 911 offices. If an emergency ticket is assigned, techs have to email a few listed contacts to address the issue because the contract support group, the techs could call is gone. CO door alarms aren’t being assigned or dispatched on, unsure if the same is true for high temp and fire alarms. I’ve seen outside doors not completely shut upon arrival in the A.M. but no alarm ticket was generated.

This is a small microcosm of what is happening all across AT&T. The yr/yr growth is slightly improved but until the financials gets much better, relocations, reorgs, layoffs, offshoring, larger areas of coverage and more work for those left, will continue. It’s all happening consistently on a monthly basis and will probably continue through 2025 or until they reach their goals.

Good info but what is happening definitely falls in line with the sparse comments they have made. Because of all of the bad decisions the company is operating in bankruptcy mode. You fleshed out what is happening in a lot of different areas which is interesting.
On the network side of the house I can remember the Uverse build and the amount of work that was lost wherever fiber was placed. By noon techs were getting NJA. Our stores are ghost towns. One of my kids has moved to a couple of different fiber fed apartments. 15 minutes after the time he is told the service will be turned up his WiFi is up and running.
Unless something happens bad financially I wouldn’t count on much of 25 with the fiber build. Supposedly they exceeded the fiber build goals in 23. I would expect them to at least do the same in 24. A lot of this is being funded by job cuts. With salaries and what is left of the benefits you are probably looking at 100,000 freed up per each position eliminated. How many positions will that buy you in those low cost countries? How much fiber? Looks like we are becoming a high capacity d-mb pipe Wireless company.

Any other orgs have any news to post?

I’ve heard some of Legg’s group is getting their relocation options this month. A targeted email has been sent out about expectations of RTO, with the usual discipline up to termination threat. Sounds like layoffs in the future for those who won’t play by their rules. I’m showing up, they sign my check and it still is getting deposited every two weeks. My productivity is down but that wasn’t my call, I’m now an occupational worker, without the job security and reduced benefits. Thanks Ren & Stimpy or is it Randall & Stankey? I’m confused!

The door alarms used to be dual dispatched but we have noticed in our area that is no longer the case. I haven’t gotten a ticket for an open door since they turned off the switch ticking system. Had a contractor recently doing work, he had the door propped open for about a hour before, I showed up to work some other tickets. No alarm came in nor was building services dispatched.

Restroom issue hasn’t been resolved yet for our area either. A lot has to do with how many employees are assigned or not, to that location. Many are considered unmanned despite, multiple people using the facilities on a daily basis at those locations. Techs, contractors, engineers, managers, etc..

If Honeypot does anymore back room deals that doesn’t involve all members, I am getting out of the union. This last one (no layoffs) was exclusive for outside titles only while, others titles such as ET’s and other support roles, continued to be surplussed over of the last few years. So much for unity and we are all in this together! I understand the Union won a lawsuit against the company but they need to do better in the future and be transparent.

As far as DEG DT and CO ET, they need to keep a division of labor. They can combine management all they want. They may have done it in smaller areas, but larger cities and metro areas, it doesn’t make any business sense. Too much equipment to turn up, maintain, work orders, routines, etc.. to do both jobs. Techs will get paid the same amount for more responsibilities and coverage.

The restroom supply issues hasn’t been solved at my locations yet, still putting in tickets regularly to get corrected. It takes days before someone shows up and they only partially refill with the bare minimum. About to file an OSHA complaint, it’s beyond frustrating.

the bathroom issue has been resolved mostly. i guess they figured out they were breaking federal law.

They saved money for a few months before correcting the issue knowing full well there's a delay between an OSHA complaint filing and action taken.

Good point on C&E. Bet there isn’t much adding capacity to a large copper cable these days. Plus it doesn’t take a small army working 24/7 for days on end to repair a damaged fiber. I would assume the reclamation projects will continue for awhile if for no other reason than to remove as much lead cable as possible.

why wouldnt they cut C&E? the new fiber projects are only going to select states.

the bathroom issue has been resolved mostly. i guess they figured out they were breaking federal law.

switch tickets for ATS support has been turned off but if you know what you are doing you should be able to repair troubles without hand holding.

they combined groups because they are not backfilling managers. i imagine DEG will be moved into CO jobs before long. Honeypot will probably make another back door deal. according to some no nothings all CO techs do anyway is wire copper pots and dsl orders, so replacing them with folks that couldnt pass a simple digital electronics and computer test is a no brainer.

door, fire and hi temp are dual dispatched to CO and CRE. if an outside tech is too lazy to close a door behind them then they deserve to have a dog or cat tear the place up.

One thing certainly is true, CBRE contractors are pretty fu--ing clueless when it comes to figuring out the needs of the business.

Well I'm only doing 8 hour days and working to rule so it doesn't bother me.

Thanks for the update, hope others post changes about what’s happening in their orgs. It’s about the only way to get unvarnished company news, these days.
