Thread regarding Humana Inc. layoffs

No AIP for Professional 1’s and Below

The company is ending AIP for associates at the Professional 1 level and below. (anyone with a 4% AIP target). They’ll get a higher base pay increase instead. This takes effect for the 2024 AIP cycle that pays out in March 2025.

Strangely, I got an AIP check in the mail, I left in August, and I thought you had to be working through December 31st.

Does anyone know if Humana is obligated to provided AIP bonus if you voluntarily resigned a few days before the Jan 1st?

There have been 2 years there have been '0' percent increases for our department. And, for anyone wondering, this has nothing to do with my performance and did affect the whole department (not sure about leaders). The highest anyone received was 3% for over a decade. 3% was the highest raise granted in our department. Based on Humana's history, I would not expect them to grant more of a yearly increase in lieu of AIP for those at Professional level 1 and below. As one poster indicated, maybe for this year, but it will not continue. And on a different subject, the 'early retirement' was offered to all non-critical positions for associates 55 or over to cut administrative costs. We had a seasoned teammate barely 55 who was a top performer, worked over 60 ours per week, and had a good attitude. He/she took the package not because he/she was ready to leave, but felt he/she was being 'targeted' and feared layoff was imminent for the next round. The chair isn't even cold yet and they are backfilling the position, and posting a second position. Exactly how is this cutting administrative costs? This is nuts. YES, let's hire 2 more people and then go through another round of layoffs to reduce costs.
And for the people posting defending Humana, you may want to 'hold your tongue' because based on Humana's history, unfortunately you will be affected at some point. Humana's a great place to work, until it's not.

I thought I was clear...I don't work in Healthcare, I never have, and I'm tracking because we are worried about our friends who are left behind.

If you aren't a corporate spy, then use what I said as a single data point and make the decision that is best for your family.

If you are a corporate spy, then treat your employees better so they don't leave and threaten 30 percent layoffs across all sectors and lines of business...including up to 2/3rds of some areas.

Grass is greener poster......you are so happy that you spend your time off stalking the Humana layoff page? Sounds like you are doing great.

Oh trust me...you can find companies that treat you better and add perks and benefits instead of taking them away. My spouse did and we are very very happy.

I just keep checking in to see how everyone is doing back at Humana and wishing you guys the best.

Folks, prior to 2018 (I believe) we never had AIP bonuses. We had our yearly raise, aside from one year when they froze raises for a year and a half. These aren't a given, it's called a bonus for that reason. If you're that up in arms about it, maybe it's time to search for a company that will guarantee you a yearly bonus.

Yep legally they have to pay, but they can also cut you lose. So there's that. Let's do what we were paid to do and move forward.

To all the company cheerleaders stating we should be glad we get paid and we shouldn’t expect anything other than a paycheck. Let me tell you something, LEGALLY they MUST pay us. Do they have to give bonuses, no they sure don’t.

Bonuses are just that.....a bonus. Not a guarantee or a promise. We get a paycheck every time it's due. Let's be happy about that.

The higher base pay increase guarantee is just for this year. There's no telling what it will look like next year. Next year it's "maybe" you get an increase but for sure you're getting NO aip. At least before it was you get a chance on raise AND aip.
But sure let's pretend this is something to celebrate.

Bonus is taxed the same as income. It just comes out with a higher percentage deduction to account for the higher marginal tax rate.

A one-time raise of 4 percent would offset loss of AIP. But who thinks they will actually do that. Not this guy. That's the fear...humana is cutting costs and this seems like an easy way to shave a percent or two off of total comp.

Omg. If you’re not going to the food pantry now, then you won’t be going if you don’t get your AIP. Humana pays well, and if things are so harsh you’re going to a food pantry, or are at risk for it, please see if you’re eligible for other community supports, or get a different job. There are many different jobs out there, in the profit and non profit sector that don’t give annual raises, or bonuses. Maybe it’s due to my age or my work history, but I’m glad I have a regular paycheck coming in, that I can budget for. If I don’t get a raise or an AIP, there is less I can do on my want list….I want to get a new roof, I want to take the kids on a road trip. But my needs list? It’s met….and I’m a single income family. I’ve adjusted my budget and if I had to go to food pantries, I know where they are. I’m over income cap for food stamps. My point is, and I don’t mean to offend anyone, but it’s a business. If HR told you that AIP was part of your package, things change. Even HR sugar coating doesn’t change the math that a raise is better than AIP and AIP is a glittery offering to save the company monies in salaries. We can all be let go, they don’t owe us anything, things can change any time, and any amount of extra income can help…unless that amount bumps you into the next tax bracket !

Let’s do some math here, because gee, math is fun. Say your base pay is 40,000/year. AIP target is 4%, so 1600 if personal and company multipliers at 100%. Do we think that Humana is going to give 4% raises to those in entry level positions every year? I think not. Just another way to save money by scr@@ing those doing most of the work!

Some of us took the job and attempted to negotiate pay but were told the base pay and AIP would more than cover the dollars requested to live. Will this still be the case? Or Will people be short changed and left to go to the local food bank to eat? Why is Humana paying for 2 CEOs right now? Why are E&I employees being retained for months and not doing anything worthy? So right by the people keeping your name in good standings.

Major carriers give both base pay increase and AIP. Is the base pay raise going to be equivalent to the AIP dollars?

I'm confused on the anger in this post. A 4% AIP that is heavily taxed and can be reduced due to situations outside your control verses a larger annual base pay increase that is GUARANTEED. Plus a higher base pay compounds every year as you are getting a % increase. I would take the base pay increase!!

And, the raise is raising your base salary for raises in the future, vs AIP, that doesn’t count towards base, AND base is taxed differently

I remember on the rewards survey last year there was a question about bonus vs increase in base pay. Personally I would rather have an increase in base pay as that would be guaranteed.

When is this supposed to be announced? Nobody in my area has said anything. If we get a higher base salary raise, that might be OK. At least, that would be guaranteed. We never know how AIP is going to pan out, right? Or am I misunderstanding?

Leaders were given the news in a meeting yesterday. An official announcement hasn’t been made yet, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up, so that you didn’t feel blindsided by it or felt like the rug was pulled out from underneath you, especially if you’re one of the people that will be impacted by this decision.

OP here. What I meant by “Professional 1 level” was anyone who is a Professional 1 and below (like Representatives). Essentially, the associates who have a 4% AIP target. I’m sorry if I worded that in a confusing way.
