majority of them were sharp and knew their stuff. Now I just think the majority of them are hucksters and unqualified. Possibly the effect of DEI hiring over the years. Maybe they are getting less sharp at the upper ranks or maybe I am getting sharper. Possibly a combination of both.

In regards to c sambar I can give you first hand knowledge of navy seals. At any one time you have approx. 6k seals active duty and reserve. Some (small percentage) really aren’t that great and several don’t age well.

Depends on how far you go back as far as competent leaders. Remember those days but wonder how they would have done in a world where voice-dial tone is being given away like a custom calling feature. The acquisitions were a disaster no doubt. Also remember conversations about the need to branch out or we would be like the water company and just be a d-mb pipe company. Looks like we have come full circle and will be a wireless and smart pipe company. If we had not of wasted all of that money “branching out” we might be the biggest wireless and pipe company right now without having the disruption to so many lives.
Hiring contractors and paying severance is more expensive than having us do the work again and saving on contractor expense and severance expense. Work the employees harder and they’ll retire organically without severance. Bring the work back. Hogwash-on erricson saving money. 15 billion dollar contracts always have corruption. You don’t think the c suite gives out that kind of money without something coming back. Money corrupts.
Sorry to have to disagree with the poster below and Chris Sambar. Yes, his service as a Navy Seal is terrific. I worked for Chris and felt highly about him - until the last couple years.
He was terrific and completely honest before the Stink was anointed.
But sad to say he caved to the Stink and changed his tune on MANY issues to fall in line with the Stink even though in previous town halls his direction was a complete 180 to the Stink policy.
No one dares to disagree with the Stink, at least publicly, and remain employed.
Case in point was a person that worked for Chris for a brief time who was a General in the Israeli Army. He could not take the BS of the Stink and left. Now that is honesty.
The Stink created Toxic-T and even the most honest folks are tainted by the Stink.
I share the criticism of certain leaders, but within my chain, there are talented individuals. Personally, I appreciate C. Sambar. Despite his directness, he's honest. The Ericsson single vendor model is a fantastic cost-reduction idea. His negotiation skills with Ericsson, positioning AT&T as a winner, are impressive. Funny, after working for countless Toxic-T organization for decades, I have seen MANY alleged Super Star brought in from the outside to fix my organization and 5th level or VP levels. Most, if not all were dolts, and either brought in as hatchet men/women, or someone's friend/family member.
I remember one Senior VP that brought in a shocking number of her pals that traveled along with her for the ride. She even brought in her old secretary - and made her a fourth level! She was a super dolt!
They leave once they completed the mass layoff, outsourcing of the organization, or just found a more lucrative deal and could not ruin the organization any further.
Solid few solid managers once you hit the 5th level or above.
And certainly things are much worse since the Stink - you don't hiss his @ss and you are history.

It is a company full of Yes people. That materialized with Stankey thinking he is the smartest man in the room piloting the disasters that were TMobile Failed Acquisition, DTV, and Time Warner.
#1 Did anyone do enough due diligence to see the ramifications of a failed acquisition under that federal administration along with handing TMUS the spectrum and cash?
#2 You bought DTV for greater bargaining power? Overpay for a dying business in order to get greater bargaining power in a dying industry?
#3 ATT and Hollywood are like 90 year old Abstinent Sister Mary Ann with 72 years in the convent getting together with Leonardo Dicaprio for a movie.
All along the way yes men told Stankey what he wanted to hear and not what he needed to hear. I see it all throughout the ranks at ATT because when people drive off the cliff after not being warned somehow they think it is fun to wind up in traction with all limbs broken. They simply never feel the pain of their decisions. They just move on to cause more havoc somewhere else.
thats because micro$shaft and google only pay their engineers $15k/year. no reason to layoff at those pay scales.
One of the problems that we have now is that DEI at the college level, since the 1980s removed the traditionally successful white males from the track to AVP and VP levels. The ones who are at those level now aren't of the same caliber as the white males of previous generations.
The other problem is that industry didn't pick up the baton of growing the diverse college graduates into successful executives. So now we are stuck in a rut where there aren't people as qualified for these roles as in previous generations. It's the same thing that happened to our best cities over the past 2 decades.
Now here's the thing. You look at companies like Google and Microsoft and you'll see that they are headed by Indians. Specifically, higher caste Indians. Our DEI system doesn't prevent discrimination against lower caste, which is turning out to be a good thing for our competitors.
You don't see Microsoft and Google having the same problems that we do. Certainly not the same size of layoffs.
I couldn’t agree more. I have worked for some really solid 4th and 5th levels. But the last few have actually been (are) white males. And they’ve all had these things in common:
- Absolutely 100% yes men. Won’t dare question anything. No matter how ridiculous.
- Will blatantly lie or avoid like the plague speaking of poor decisions at the business unit level or failures at the business unit level.
- Will choose the words out of their mouth and the decisions they make or don’t make solely on their personal survival.
These are not men that you’d want to deploy with in the military.
