I just got a comparable senior level job offer at a different company that will require relocation to a new city with a substantially higher cost of living and with fewer benefits. I’m in a team at Nike that might not see much change or firing this round- but obviously can’t be certain- and have a solid past performance track record and generally good leadership support. What would you do here? Take the offer and run? Or wait it out at Nike?

Take the offer and RUN!!!
OP, I’m in your shoe (pun intended) and I’m leaning towards go… why? I did a best case/worst case analysis for both scenarios and worst case for staying at Nike was being being jobless in Portland with few companies in my field. Worst case in moving to the new city would be working at a job I hate but in a city with tons of opportunities in my field. There are other inputs in my analysis as I would expect there are for you but ultimately you’re the CEO of you. Choosing to stay because it might not work out is as much a fear based decision as choosing to leave because “i might get laid off” .. my point is, think and make the best decision for you based on what you know now.
How would you feel if you left and nothing happened to your team?
@1ffc+1qsvZ2Si you said , everyone who gets laid off usually says they had an “excellent track record” and “leadership backing”
Say more?
You should take the offer if you have to ask this in an anonymous forum.
Also, everyone who gets laid off usually says they had an “excellent track record” and “leadership backing”
OP, only you and your family can make the right decision for yourselves. No one else here has the context, information, drivers, triggers, or anything else to make a definitive "decision." Best of luck to you and your family. One positive thing, from my point of view, is you would be getting from what is becoming one of the worst places to live - Oregon - and especially Portland and WA county (if you are in WA county.)
Every industry has and will have lay offs. Sometimes organizations start lay offs with folks that are new to the company. It happened to me in 2021 when I made a fear-based move and went to another company. Four months later, the new company started mass lay off and started with those with least tenure with the company. Guess who was screwed? Yep! Me.... Think very carefully. Does this new job need a relocation or move? Is it aligned with your career path? Why this position became available? Is it a new position or did they fire someone? Can you find and talk to some of former employees via LinkedIn ?
I can tell you I jumped ship from a company when it was having a tough time even though I was being invested in. It was the worst move of my career.
As yourself : how does this next job help with the job you want afterwards? Does the move cater to your values and lifestyle goals?
It really depends what you want out of life. In general though, I wouldn’t make a lateral move for less money (considering COL) unless it had a longer term ROI for me
Don’t make fear based decisions, do what’s best for you without attaching your story to a “what if” scenario. Coulda shoulda woulda is a game for fools. Nike has been around for a long time and isn’t going anywhere. Every industry has layoffs, there is never a guarantee, focus on what’s best for you. Stay present. This is your timeline, your life.
Is this a comparable offer competitive within its own market? Would this new city be a place where you see yourself long term? Whenever relocation comes into place you have to think about some immaterial things like finding a new community. From how you describe it it sounds like a sidegrade at best. Maybe you could negotiate something that sounds more reasonable given the price of living?
NYC is the greatest city in the world. You will not only be getting the new role, but access to everything the city has to offer. I wouldn't wait another day...
