Thread regarding Truist Bank layoffs

For those doubting hBB&T

For those who went through the BB&T LDP, you will remember the ropes course game we played. We separated into teams to try and when points to see which would obtain the most. We quickly realized that if all the teams worked together we all won and obtained the max points.

For those who Do not understand BB&T culture, by dispersing all of the BB&T employees into all of the competitors of Truist doesn’t mean we won’t still work together. Business bankers, who work at purely commercial banks are still working with wealth at investment shops that don’t do banking. Truist has now created a network among their competitors. Banking is about relationships, not the company.

With the exit of another Scott Stringfellow team / WA’s / business bankers with more to come, Truist is slowly being exited out of historically BB&T markets. Keep trying to convince people 800 numbers are cool and tech rules. You will find out that clients trust the people they see at church and/ or have a personal relationship.

Tell that to the leadership that still refers to the bank as SunTrust, wears blue and stays in Atlanta while our headquarters is supposed to be Charlotte.

Truist is just SunTruist. BB&T is dead and gone yeah, but SunTrust is alive and well.

I come into contact with many LDP people and everyone I have worked with is fantastic. I am sorry BB&T’s family atmosphere went away.

Also not sure why people revere Ivy Leaguers so much. Completely overrated institutions.

Worked at BB&T and the LDP was one the most artificial programs that I had ever witnessed. You had ECU grads that were convinced they were IVY league smart. It was a hoot.

BBT and SunTrust don’t exist anymore. It’s Truist. Until people realize it’s not going to be like it was - for better or worse, then you’ll be feeling this way. If you don’t like the path Truist is on, I’m sure there’s a plethora of places to join. I wish you the best!

examples of falling up include:

  • bought by bb&t, now run truist
  • oh sp-t liquidity crunch, sell what you can (mcgriff)
  • oh sp-t credit crisis, sell what you can (coca cola stock)

it is extraordinary, and you have to applaud us for it

SunTrusters have always been excellent at falling up, in my experience. hence, no leadership development program necessary.

IMO, the hBB&T LDP program was one of the (many) reasons the bank had such a backwards, inbred, nepotistic (yes, I can make up words!) culture that didn't adapt to a changing environment. My observation was that many of these folks did not perform at their jobs, but instead of being pushed out of the organization they were often just moved around into other positions and given preference over performing, qualified candidates. Also, not for nothing, but many of the LDP graduates I met in my time there often looked like they came right out of a Hi---r-youth program, if you catch my drift.

Hopefully they have gotten rid of the program and moved on. Good riddance I say!

@fmq+1qqFZes5 That's one of the biggest issues I have. We're more than willing to let go of top talent producers and let complete mediocrity stay. It's pretty shocking. Have seen countless examples across all different LOB's in my region.

The LDP program was designed to incent college graduates to come work for a middle-tier bank that needed to compete for talent with larger banks. "Come work for us, and we'll put you in our Leadership Program". These were not the top performers or the best graduates - just the ones that were on the fence about what bank to work for. The fear culture at BB&T eventually morphed this program into a way to shelter mediocre talent and very bad behavior from the appropriate consequences. If you were a manager at BB&T you thought twice about taking any corrective action against someone who went through the LDP program. You were also rewarded for promoting them. No one would readily admit an LDP was a failure, because that would mean the program was flawed, which meant Allison was flawed, which meant BB&T was flawed - and no one would ever admit to that. If the new Truist leadership is taking steps to start measuring based on performance instead of nonsensical merit badges like LDP, then you should look forward to that. It will make us a better bank.

You lost me at LDP. It is a travesty that program still exists while top performers were shown the door.
