Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

What is considered middle management?

Manager here. What is considered middle management? 🤔 I have 2 direct reports and my manager has 3 direct reports and his manager has 3 direct reports. I am here with Nike 2 years, my manager has been here 10 years and his manager has been 15 years.
Manager(myself), manager, manager, Director, Senior Directio, VP ..

This has been going on for years. Main issue is they will pay off friends, give them a package and rehire in 3 months.

@1xnj+1qjDP7n9 LOL! That really made me laugh.... Honestly I do not do any of those. I am more like an IC who has been labeled as manager but everything you described reminded me of my own manager actually!

Do you have Stanford/Ivy League MBA?
Were you inserted into a position that you have no experience in?
Were competent, experienced, colleagues passed over for promotion to make room for you?
Do you take credit for work your direct reports do without as much mentioning them?
Are you conspicuously absent half of the time?
Is your head firmly up your manager's keester?

You're the problem
You probably won't get laid off...but you should.

For Tech at least they did a pretty major shift earlier in the year to support an industry aligned job and pay architecture where Directors without reports were demoted slightly to be Principals and no longer had Director titles. If a person is still a Director or Senior Director with only 1 report or no reports at this time, then that would be cause for concern as it adds to the case for elimination/consolidation of the role. That doesn't mean that anyone who had the previous title change to Principal is safe of course.... we're all potentially on the chopping block for whatever reason the corporate overlords deem "necessary".

If you manage people and were not asked to provide a list or are not in the know who will get the boot in the reorg you are middle management and at risk.

This is function dependent. Where I am literally everyone has a manager title but are actually IC. Directors are managers, senior directors like sr managers, and then there’s a thick layer of VPs reporting to VPs who report to VPs

sorry to say but you are definitely at risk. as a thumb of rule manager must have minimum 5 subordinates. a senior manager around 15-20 and a director around min to 40-50.

sadly here rat filled with his cronies and if you check org chart... there are many directors with hardly any sub ordinates.

Ours is IC>Manager>Manager>Dir>Sr Dir>Vp>Vp>Vp>Vp
Doubt if any VP is being let go

Once you're managing another manager - anything below you is 'middle' management.

Middle management is people managing people managing people before Vp. So manager > director> senior director (IMO)
