I prefer knowing about layoffs in advance, even if it's weeks or even months in advance, than finding out the day of. This gives me a chance to prepare and get my ducks in a row just in case my name is on the list. The longer we have, the better prepared we should all be.

The fireside chat (that our VPs strongly suggested we go watch) about layoffs was a clear signal as well.
Leadership changes got announced in Summer, almost 6 months ago. Since then, it’s been clear to everyone and their mothers that layoffs would be the next step. How much more heads up to prepare does one need?
