W2 Severence Error?

Humana only took out 272.72 federal taxes on my almost 40K severence pay in 2023..
I feel like this is an error as I asked specifically that Taxes be taken out.

Now I owe the IRS an unreasonable amount.. Anyone else seeing this?
Just another way Humana sc--wed me over last year

They messed up on my state tax calculations last year and are collecting even less this year. I had to go in and request additional state withholding. Glad I found this thread so I check they actually do what I asked.

HR is to protect the company, not the employees

You got $40K in severance pay! Reasonable taxes is all a matter of perspective.
What were you making a year and how long had you been at Humana? That's way better than a lot of companies who lay you off. My old one was 1 week of severance for every year worked. So for instance, if you made $100K and worked there 20 years, that still would only be $38K!

Yea, I started in September of last year and noticed only 7% was taken out for my FEDERAL withholding from paycheck after claiming 1. I am now changed and am claiming 0 and they are taking out a reasonable amount so I won't owe for taxes next year. I don't know what is up with their accounting and HR, but due diligence is a must working here!

If the taxes were not withheld and the $ payed out to you, then you are responsible to pay the IRS.

Whenever you expect a large payout, you should factor 50% will go to taxes so that you aren't surprised by the "unreasonable amount" of taxes due.

I called HR, and they aren’t responsible. The taxes are owed and I was not diligent to see if the deduction was being taken out

HR must be held accountable for this.

Same thing happened to me! I asked for an additional $50 be taken out of every check, and shame on me for not looking at my deductions in January, but it never happened and I owe the IRS, too!
