Thread regarding Enbridge Inc. layoffs

If you are over 50, you should be worried

It's becoming more obvious each day that the management wants to get rid of everybody whose paycheck reflects their worth. Most of this are those of us who have been here a while and who have earned our raises. Sadly, all the knowledge and experience we have accumulated along the way doesn't matter. We're too expensive for them now. Every single one of us has a target on our backs.

I love the disrespect to the old guys who put in their time for 20-30plus years regardless of union or supervisor. Most of us who actually knows what hard work is not watching vac trucks and others work. We taught you,! Trained your stupid A$$, put up with your stupidity and lack of knowledge but still trained you and made you better.
We solved problems and did the work while you sat on your phone calling a friend because you don’t take accountability for your actions and look for someone else to blame. When we are gone you are sc--wed because you know zilch!

I don’t work for Enbridge, but I do read this forum and my heart goes to each of you in sincerity.

Many of us drank the kool aid that our middle class society poured for us. Go to university, get a white collar job in an office tower, and in 30-40 years, we will all get a shot at some executive role, and then retire. But the game is not that easy, and very few, maybe 1 out of 100, will get the keys to the executive washroom. Reality is that the trades education is the most versatile one out there, and many families shunned their kids to going into one…it’s dirty work, lower status or tan white collar prestige job, blah blah blah. For me, it is too late to change my career, but I would never want my kids to go into a white collar job like engineering, HR, IT, etc. So many professionals are trapped in this bird cage and are helpless. If they lose their job, they’re in trouble; if they are lucky to survive, they will get dumped more work with stagnant pay. Good luck to all, and hope for better days ahead.

Yeah I kinda noticed that the guy with gray hair does not call in sick coz he has a hang over. I saw the younger guy did it. Not only that he’s using the sick leave benefits for hang over, he’s also sleeping on the job. So check on your coworkers who’s not moving but holding the computer mouse and facing his computer. He’s probably asleep and already in La La Land instead of actually working.

I'll basically take the guy with gray hair by default. You'll find the same distribution of talent among them as you'll find in younger folks. Some are great, some aren't... most are jammed up in the middle.

But what you'll generally find is their attitude is better. They flex better with changing needs and conditions. They don't leap to the text of their employment contract to justify minimal performance. And they don't get stressed if you need them to do something outside of their lane. They take less sick time. And... dare I say it... they're more stable. On average, I can depend on them more so than new grads.

That's my experience. Take it as you will.

The comment above "time to get out old timer. Overpaid oldies blocking future of you ger generations- your experience is easily replaced.

This company has to get rid of all these old a-s SMEs with way too much vacation time.

Totally a d-mb a-s comment. What a arrogant a--hole that defiantly needs to be walked out

In Canada they are offering pension bridges for those eligible over 50. Those that have worked there for 30 years or more are looking at a full company pension or close to it.
Over the years I have seen knowledgeable and valued people that were over 50 retire, then almost immediately return as contractors/consultants getting a paycheck on top of their full, pension pay. They ended up getting paid less but overall made more than before they "retired".
Sometimes these "layoffs" are really just the company cleaning house and getting rid of older and younger dead weight. Some older employees that are close to retirement and VALUED could very well be "pushed" into retirement (with the pension bridge) with the knowledge that they will be called back as a contractors/consultants.
By doing this the company saves $$$ by paying them less than the younger workers yet keeping the knowledge and experience; great value for money!
I know the layoffs include contractors but just like the regular employees, there is dead weight low value contractors that need to be sent packing and replaced with new contractors that require no training, have decades of experience and are cheaper.
I am not worried at all. Actually, I am looking forward to this!😃

It crazy the amount of work that is been outsourced to third party companies costing millions. While employees seat on their as--s cozy and barely doing mental work but supervising contractors. So an Individual Contributor is a low level supervisor

This has nothing to do if you like working for Enbridge or not, a lot of people don’t have loyalty anymore. Just do your best to make what is paid to you make worth. Companies are going to do what they need to survive. If Company is not cost efficient it will be more detrimental to everyone if you they go bankrupt.

That’s why you take care of your own household coz nobody owes you anything, no for profit company promised you a lifetime employment.

Just so you know, this “trend” is not happening in Enbridge only. It also happens to a lot of companies so if you’re working for a for profit company plan your future accordingly. Companies are not only costing them your base salary, even if you have tenure but the company can operate by replacing you with younger and cheaper workforce there’s a chance you can get chopped.

Those benefits and pension plans are also costing the company a lot and they figured someone younger and hungry to get some experience and money will come along to replace you. Besides younger and newer blood are more trainable and still less likely to argue with management.

Labor laws in US are geared towards in favor of employers and in Canada you might get some protection but it doesn’t guarantee you keeping your job long term. Welcome to Capitalism!
