Well I'm sure it's easy to hand-wave away work-life balance when you're starting to get in the ballpark of 7-figure compensation.
But the concept actually means something to us lowly scrubs who don't get paid enough to have a pot to pi-s in.

It's interesting you bring that up, there was also a question in the Q&A about whether or not we track why prospective employees decline offers from AEP. They answered that yes we do track that, and then they flat-out admitted that lack of remote flexibility is a common theme. However instead of actually thinking about what that means, they just repeated the "collaboration" mantra like a robot.

I've realized that interacting with leadership is like talking to a wall. They don't care and nothing sinks in. They've already decided everything and their job is to trick you into thinking you were a part of the decision. Cracking the whip, but with a smile.

What a joke in Transmission - how do we attract talent that is younger with remote work...

We just keep hoping they can't read that we have no flexibility and no work life balance!

Good job vp! Sounds like we will eventually find people never. Place is a JOKE

Reading some of the comments about my former company, I am so glad I left last year. I thought I was going to regret leaving in the event the company became a go to place to work. I'm thinking my decision to leave was now a really good decision. I could not imagine working there now. This site reaffirms that every time I read new comments. Good luck guys, there is life beyond AEP.

@2vw6 I’m not sure if they wonder why they can’t retain them - the culture/tone feels like it was meant to continue push out the perceived “middle” layers of management.

@2vw0
And they wonder why they can't retain the under 50 set.
Hey Doug, young men don't push all of their parenting duties onto unemployed wives anymore, because they don't have them. Households today need two workers. You will actually have to hire enough people (I know...GASP!) if you want to get the work done.

Anyone see the Transmission Q&A that went out today? Oof.
Some hard hitters in there. Doug was asked what the company is doing to ensure work-life balance and he basically said if you care about work-life balance then AEP isn't a good fit for you. Lol.

I love the job descriptions, why join us, you will experience a supportive environment with growth opportunities. I know my experience was a lot different. You treated me like sh-t and retaliated against me for wanting to advance my career. IMO you will experience narsitic leadership that does not have the mental state to acknowledge their own toxic behavior. This is the resson why you are reading this comment on this web sight. This is also the reason why the company has such high turnover. You are toxic. Common you ignorsnt leaders give a down post to this, you must hide from thr truth. Your fragile ego could not comprehend anyone elses experiences under you leadership. Thank you for destroying a good company and blowing out everyone elses candles. It must make you feel good about yourself.

@2v60 It feels like the lack of rumors around leaving 1RP probably just means there’s no big splash like leaving downtown Columbus. In other words, we will likely just continue at 1RP and do some renovation work.

@2vrt Some bucket bunny inflate your ego? Everyone knows how the sausage is made. People do appreciate the work required but let's not pretend that there aren't a few hundred younger men and women ready to step in your boots.

Comments like this typically come from some line foreman with dirt on his hips from the gloves he used once a few weeks ago.

Lineworkers scaling poles in the wind, dispatchers juggling outages, substation techs guarding the grid—none of that magic happens without us. Every safe restoration, every flicker fixed before a kid yells “Trick or treat!”—that’s skill, training, and solidarity.

This Halloween, remember: the grid isn’t powered by pumpkins—it's powered by people. Strong contracts, strong crews, strong communities. Stand up, sign up, and show up—because when we bargain together, we win together. In the end, it’s simple: we the people.

@2v11 when your boss comes to you and ask, why have you not completed the survey, that should tell you they know who took and who didn't.
I completed mine in about 5 minutes, start to finish. Didn't read the questions, just marked it high and moved on.
It was worth about that much effort based on what I will get in return from it.
They will break down the numbers, give Bill a report and he'll say, everything looks good, on to the next item on the list.
These surveys are just a check box for them, nothing will change.

I’m a junior level employee and I just gave everything the highest rating because I’m afraid of retaliation. I had to move to the city for RTO and now my finances are stretched so thin I don’t have the security to feel like I can be authentic on a survey. Bill has me trapped just like he wanted

Don’t assume that this or any other survey is anonymous. It is, after all, collected via computer and reported back by your respective managers.

Don’t think for a second that the Yes Men from the very top down won’t hesitate to root out the “problem people” to save themselves.

Your best option for self preservation is to complete the survey with high marks. Don’t completely skip it, as that will also identify you.

I did the survey this time and gave lower ratings than I ever have. I think they need to know employees are not satisfied with what is happening at AEP. I think people who come to this site are venting and that is great to have this space, but nothing will change if we don’t at least try by completing the survey, that is if you want to continue your career at AEP. I know we will all get action items and it won’t change anything but at least upper management and hopefully the board will know of the frustration of the employees.

I believe it was the year after TR came onboard and we had a survey. I heard there were over 600 negative comments, most about her. The survey was quickly wrapped up and not official comments were made above Director level. Pretty much everything was handled by the first line managers.
She knew she couldn't say anything because we all knew outsourcing was her primary objective and she was the villain in our horror story.

@2twv
And yet each year you get assigned action items based on your lowest scores. So you have to come up with a plan to fix problems, that aren't even yours to begin with (insert some poor management decision here) and then magically make it all better. Pass. All 5s and leave me alone.
Management may not be worth 5s, but I sure as sh-t don't want to be hassled even more.

@2twm Each year I struggle with this! They’re not worthy of 5’s (also leaders would NEVER blindly give any of us fives/role model just to be done with a review; keep that in mind). But also, if we are honest, we then have to try to resolve that which is a broken leadership system. Oh the woes of corporate America

Survey always gets top marks on every question. If you don't and you tell them about the problems, the issues are never managements fault. It always ends with the lowest scores being action items for you to correct. Save yourself the drama and just put all 5s with no comment.

My survey thanked AEP for dumping thousands of more vehicles on the highways and helping me wait in traffic after the 3rd or 4th crash on 270.

Retaliation exists at AEP. Better off not taking the survey. Look at your leader, did they nake it to that position by hard work and helping others. There is more of a chance they walked all over emloyees to get where they are at. That type of leadership is bred at AEP.

@2tq4 last I checked, only 58% completed it. I haven't done it, not interested in doing it.
I have never seen a survey at AEP ever made things better. All they do is make work for the ones that do the majority of the work around here.
If I'm forced to do it, I'll just mark everything as fine with no comments. Done.
They've lost the support of the employees, they just don't know it.

It's amazing the number of people still leaving AEP. I worked at AEP for close to two decades and don't recall seeing or hearing about the level of turnover there is today. I really liked working at AEP for most of my time but am so glad I got out. So it's kind of sad to read this thread and see what AEP has become. When I left, it seemed like people couldn't believe there are other jobs out there/or expressed they were scared to leave. I promise there are many other options, with as good or better benefits. It's not that scary. In fact, it's quite a lot better on the other side!

@2tdc AEP employees are mature enough and virtuous enough to only demand what they have earned and deserve because we realize customers pay our wages and for our benefits. It is you, who contrives to steal far more than you have earned and deserve. Customers see us working in the oppressive heat and humidity, the frigid cold and howling wind, late at night and early in the wee morning hours to keep their lights on or restore their electric service. Our dirty hands and uniforms and our inexhaustible determination to overcome adversity makes our value glaringly obvious to our stakeholders, yours is always dubiously doubtful.
