They better not come after architecture, it would be ruinous for Global Tech … tech teams aren’t equipped intellectually or otherwise to make big decisions about technology roadmaps. Nobody’s day to day work is more quantifiable and impactful.

GA would be reduced by half for sure. useless organization.
GA will reduced by half for sure. thats just a useless organization in my mind.
Rather than creating any unified architecture or vision, GA has created roadblocks to global platforms in favor of geo or function specific solutions which only serve their egos or those of the empire building VPs that they want to appease. We have a license for almost all known enterprise software, yet none of it is applicable globally. The number of redundant application, platforms, and related organizations is staggering.
I asked my VP if I could help with the restructuring by supplying a list of engineers I’ve worked with that don’t make the grade. Not getting GA’s insight during the last round of tech layoffs was a huge mistake.
This post shows your complete ignorance as to how the world works … GA has to think of the complete enterprise, you have the luxury of sitting in your silo coming up with your poorly thought out solutions that fit your space and your space alone! I can’t wait to share some of these comments at our next offsite … we will have a good chuckle at your expense.
A good idea is only as good as your ability to get it done. Ideas born out of very little practical experience are worthless. Is the collaboration of ideas, experience, and business knowledge that creates those ‘out of the park’ experiences. You want a good project with a big ROI? You work from the ground up? Not the top down. Get people on the ground to buy in, listen to what will really help them, and you will build momentum towards something that really moves the needle forward - for tech and business. GA is fairly worthless because they don’t engage & collaborate… they dictate … and often what is proposed is completely impractical. Want to raise the bar? Gotta be willing to roll up your sleeves, grab a shovel and dig in. Problems at Nike will never (ever) be solved with shiny new tools, they will be solved with creating quality processes, quality code, and going after the massive Data Quality issues that are like a cancer in every system and business process. New tools are lipstick on a pig without going after the underlying data & process issues. To automate it requires quality processes and quality data … all GA ever does is come up with new tools and wants everyone to move to them, and all we can ever do is move the same issues and problems to the new tools … and they get progressively worse with each new rollout of new systems
GA is a joke. They will come up with POc and that will work only in happy paths. It won’t work for edge cases. They will move to other useless POCs. But the other people only will be struggling in the end. Most of the PE and DE are useless junks. They only talk but if you assign a problem they will come up with interesting bullsh-t answers.
20 plus years huh!!!! And still haven’t made it to the big leagues. Sounds like you’ll never make it to the apex of your profession and become an architect. Keep on being you, and making me look good.
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not... as a long term (20+ years) IT person, GA has always been pretty useless, but I've heard them talk exactly like that.
Listening to Amazon tell you about their latest tech is one thing, making it actually work is another - and most architects aren't allowed to get their hands dirty enough to find out.
The best way to describe GA is they do arts and crafts ! Draw diagrams and write confluence pages. They are detached from reality as none of them have written any code in any recent times! So they come up with these crazy schemes and expect people to just follow it and if it fails .. it’s the implementation that has gone wrong ! They never have any actual deliverables to deliver !
@1axw fu-k India...they only follow instructions since they don't know how to actually engineer since their schooling and certifications are as real as the tooth fairy.
Here at Global Architecture we Re better then you and we know it.
If teams actually followed the guidance of Global Architecture Nike would be light years ahead … I’ve been saying for years, if we outsourced Engineering to India and just kept GA at world headquarters we would be twice as productive. Teams in India LISTEN to guidance and follow orders, instead GA is stuck navigating difficult entitled personalities stateside.
GA aren't generals, they are policy wonks in a think tank, to keep the metaphor.
Their "solutions" don't exist, and aren't grounded in the reality of the immediate problems. They won't or can't actually do any of work, and somehow expect something magical to appear.
I laughed out loud while reading this post! Thanks for making my night.
LoL...generals...you are nothing more then over paid privates who should join JW in the ground.
Generals win the war, it’s the overarching strategy that makes the difference … you get your quick wins on the front lines but they come from your betters having set the stage for the patterns years before.
@1nhu the rank and file engineers are the ones doing all the work while global architecture just sits at home collecting a pay check and doing nothing important. You all can sit in meetings all you want, and provide no important information while the engineers figure our how to keep everything working as best as it can. Get off your high horse. We make the hard decisions for edge and test everything...while you sit on your hands.
We need an ivory tower so we can see all the mistakes the rank and file engineers make!!! We could get by with less engineers if we had better quality control on our hiring practices. Shrinking the architecture presence will plunge Nike Tech into a dark age.
@1hwm Sounds like plenty of other parts of Nike as well
That team is led by incompetent Sr dirs that focus on self-promotion and lobbying instead of high-quality thought leadership. Have not provided meaningful guidance or actions since the last VP left about a year ago. If there are cuts, better start from the top.
epic troll
Global architecture is as useless as JW was.
Well.. my oh my... what an ivory tower you are in there.
