Is it wrong to feel disappointed I was not laid off? I keep hoping to receive severance and it never happens. It's the best example of Murphy's Law I've ever seen. I'd happily volunteer but I have a feeling that would only serve to keep me off the list because they'll then expect me to quit.

sweatshop
Why someone would mention this in a post here. I cant believe people still consider working in such places in current times. Missing awareness or OK with it. Is it older people mentality? Or people does not have courage to quit such places Or weak to not able to be competitive for other jobs
New year resolution, LEAVE oracle at any cost.
seems a few feeling roasted??? what an a-sh0-le? People are just sharing their observations about ORCL, and not personally at any one person, Why are you so offended?
If you are still at ORCL try to prove this wrong by action and not by reacting negatively. Show genuine interest in their well being and growth for IC and not just few. Train your managers instead of making them d-mb S-h-t H-e-a-d-s. If you are unable to compete in the current market, that itself tell you where ORCL is going and all threads here must be a warning sign for all who are still at ORCL.
what San Francisco bubble....
Your words tell you you are so mediocre. No wonder you like Oracle
I was with Oracle for 26 years and was RIF'd a few years ago. They gave me a few months to look for another job but I decided to just take the generous severance and retire early. It was a great ride.
If you are not happy with what you are doing, then look for another position in the company or outside or retrain for something else. Good jobs can turn into bad jobs and bad jobs can turn into good jobs.
There are a decent number of tech jobs out there but they are in non-tech industries and most don't pay as well as the big-cap tech companies. Those are my observations. But work shouldn't be drudgery or you'll just be unhappy for the rest of your working life and it can take a toll on your mental health.
Our son works in oncogenomics and the pay isn't like big-cap tech and I suggest he look around. But he is happy at what he does, has great benefits and job security (you can't outsource what he does) and he meaningfully helps a lot of people and the link is more direct than writing database or cloud software.
I worked in tech since the 1970s and have seen decades of layoffs since then and you just put away money when the times are good because you know that there will be bad times.
So make a plan to change your circumstances and have a look around at what's out there. A lot of companies and organizations use Oracle products and need expertise to use and manage them.
young guys who doesn't know the meaning of working for a sweatshop
seems like you have been through a lot in your life. that's why young have courage to change. Old guys like you do not have enough b--lls to do that
worked in many companies across multiple continents

I don't know in what San Francisco bubble you grew up, but I worked in many companies across multiple continents. Oracle is a good company in comparison to average market. They pay on time and don't work you to death, which is already better than most.
Your words tell about you so well. Hope people like you never become people manager which is the case right now at Oracle
oh no! mean words! again, most of you seems to be young guys who doesn't know the meaning of working for a sweatshop. may be you are all Google level devs here, sure, then no wonder you don't like Oracle. or may be you are just a delusional snowflake who hasn't got a reality check yet.
If you are an IC, do not work very hard and enjoy life. Start saying NO to unnecessary demands, extended working hours and weekends. DONT be fooled by promotions @ Oracle. They are the biggest trap. Keep learning relevant open source technologies and get out. I know lot of people making 6x-7x following this strategy.
Vote +1 if u see these scenarios, is it a common trait across the org?
Quite common in CX Org lead by RT, KR. Beware before joining
Been waiting 4 years for a payoff. Despite being the top performing rep for 3 FYs straight I’ve been passed over for promo every time for a less qualified or external person.
Finally had enough of working for leadership that’s been scraped from the bottom of the barrel of other hyperscalers. Ja--ing it in and going to restart as a rep in a startup…hopefully I can move up in more of a meritocracy.

# 5+ yrs as IC with consistent best perf rating & no promotion.
# Mgrs and upper levels getting promotion every other year.
# Mgrs treating ICs like trash, taking credits of their hard work.
# No reasonable raises, bonuses or stock options to IC.
# 90% of the recent layoffs only affected the ICs.
# Favoritism within the team.
# Hiring family/relatives over others.
# If u complain or report any of the above to HR, no actions and just to top it off, u will risk your position in the next layoff.
what dumpsters and shitholes I worked previous decades
They also talk about you the same way. Here people are just sharing what they feel. Pretty myopic view of world you have. Respect other people feeling and pain if you cannot relate
Oracle is by far the best company
Delusional and captivated by a dying brand. Either you are a middle manager yourself or floored by bosses d-ck

20+ years of working as software engineer
Oracle is tier-2
Used to be, not anymore
May be a some secret special hidden BU covering 5% of employees??? My personal experience is exact opposite. I rarely got any bonus and that too like couple of undies kinda
No raises but they get pretty good bonuses.

What do all of you guys do at Oracle? I have friends that work there and they’re not unhappy. No raises but they get pretty good bonuses.
It's the nature of the forum. I am pretty happy in my IC5 engineering role. In my 20+ years of working as software engineer, Oracle is by far the best company and my current project and domain is the most interesting I ever worked on and even paid very well. However, it just shows for what dumpsters and shitholes I worked previous decades. Most commenters here act like they only worked for Google and MicroSoft. It's laughable. Oracle is tier-2 company and a decent one in comparison to the rest of the market.

I had to take a part time bartending job
I know many others who are doing side hustles just to sustain the family.
I had to take a part time bartending job. Kids in college hard make enough at the O. Weekend tending bar on a Saturday night few hundred in cash is nice. We do what we need to do to help our kids.. Job market has slowed some, but keeping the faith for 2024 new employment. The O, has su-ked enough life out of me and everyone else.
if it didn't happen till now, waiting would be waste of your time and career. Move on
If you continue at Oracle, soon you will be below poverty line. Better late than sorry for your entire life.
Looks like we should all be applying for landfill jobs.
I found out most people working at a local landfill are making 25% more than me, and frankly, even if the pay were the same it looks like a more desirable position.
I upvoted all the replies here except the second and third.
Developing negative emotions will hurt you more rather than company.
Few tips based on people who actually staged it successfully
- If you are in good terms with your boss, ask for it
- be a bottom most performer by all means, like keep doing minimal work to not land in PIP. Do quality work but take more time doing it
- Mention you cannot work for extended hours or on weekends
- Talk to other people you trust, not known to your boss. People are very creative and come up with fantastic ideas
- Use multiple tactics
- If nothing, anyway keep preparing for and get out.
This is the absolute feeling am going through each day !!!
“ The severance is not that great. Why stay?”
It depends where you are in the world. In some countries it’s actually good.
I was doing under the bare minimum and they still wouldn’t let me go. I really wanted the estimated 4+ months of severance pay, I think I was such a good deal to them even with my poor work ethic. I finally gave up as I got the feeling I probably would have had to go through a PIP first. I got a new job making 60% more with about 1/4 of the stress so I’m thankful for that but I really would have liked those 4 paid months off and then gotten this new job.
The reason you are not laid off, is because once your headcount is gone, there is no guarantee they can back fill. Besides, even if they could backfill, they would probably have to pay more since you probably haven't had a raise in years. At Oracle if you do something that is even a minor issue to find a replacement, they will keep you on. Oracle tries to get shiny-new people at lower costs, but often those people are even less productive than a disgruntled current employee. In my own department, they hired a shiny and bright new person, who wrote and continues to write checks against the "old guard". Turns out they can't even do a 1/3 of what they said they could do. That new person keeps saying its because of this or that. What a nightmare, because now they can't get rid of that person. So yeah, chances are some people will never get let go no matter how much they want to be.
We keep going back, like a dog returning to what it has thrown up! It will never get better!
The severance is not that great. Why stay?
You’re not alone in feeling this way. Most people on here will tell you to just leave. But decide based on your own circumstances and what’s best for you. Personally I’m setting a deadline and if I’m not laid off by then, I have to quit. In the meantime I’m putting money aside to make that possible. Good luck to you
