It does look better on a résumé to say you took early retirement package instead of being RIF’ed.

They did send this to everyone over 55 who qualifies. The key is what it means to quality. Go read the retirement police in the ASC. It’s clear on the qualifications.

If someone didn’t receive it who qualifies, it’s because that person is in a position so mission critical to the business that they can’t afford to lose the talent/knowledge. That’s not the average director or associate VP or associate. It’s for people with highly specialized skill sets or knowledge.

Hope this helps clear up some of the misunderstanding.

The idea of a pension covering your retirement costs is becoming outdated….gone are the days where you work for 30 years for one company and get a pension to cover life expenses, unless you are military or a state worker…if you are 55 and worked at Humana for 30 years, you would probably get enough to offset social security….not many companies offer a pension, they offer the 401k

The whole concept of “early retirement” from Humana cracks me up!!! They don’t provide you with a pension. A severance package does not provide for retirement!!!! Humana truly thinks its associates are stupid.

If you get laid off you get the exact same thing as this "offer". You will be worse off if you accept it because you cant get unemployment. So what exactly is that should "incentivise" anyone with this insulting offer. It would be one thing if they sent it to everyone over 55 that qualified the offer. They did not. Humana balances their budget on the backs of their employees.

Offering early retirement doesn’t target seniors. Period. Companies all across America have offered early retirement for years—way before Humana.

You accept, or you don’t. It’s entirely voluntary. If you accept, you get the exact same benefits you would if you’d been part of a RIF. You get two weeks of salary for every year worked, not to exceed one year of pay. You also get any PTO you’ve earned paid out, plus you get to keep your medical benefits at the employee rate until severance ends.

You also get to have a retirement celebration based on the number of years of service.

What’s not to like about that? It’s a much better outcome than RIF or regular retirement.

And why is Humana offering it? My bet: They need salaries moved off the books before the first quarter of 2024 starts. It’s an accounting trick so they can show they’ve saved X number of dollars.

I hope they offer this program yearly or bi-annually. It’s a benefit I want when I can take advantage of it financially.

They aren’t targeting seniors! A RIF is happening and they are trying to offer a possible option for those that are eligible before having to do cuts.

Why would a company focused on Medicare and “seniors “ want to appear to be targeting seniors ? Can you imagine the advertising from other insurance companies? ( Here at United we value seniors that’s why 30% of our staff is over 55) etc also how this could be viewed in the population? The seniors for the most part have more knowledge and damn better work ethic . If they do a RIF and target seniors isn’t that discrimination?

Below poster…maybe that age group received it since they’re meeting eligibility requirements….your age plus amount of years worked equals 65….it would seem that those that started work at Humana at age 45 or younger, and are 55 now are eligible…simple math, not a conspiracy. And appropriate, since the option is available for retirement from Humana at any time with that criteria, not just before RIFs.

Nope, not just T&S, appears companywide.

So many associates received 'voluntary early retirement' emails today. ALL of the associates in my department and several other departments age 55 and over received the email. I do not know one associate age 55/+ that did not recieve the email. Did all associates age 55/+ receive this email? I know associates in critical roles were not supposed to get the email. BUT, does anyone actually know of an associate in this age group that did not get it? Everyone I know did!

Did the offers go to just T&S?

If you accept the early retirement, you get the two weeks for every year worked. You don’t get severance, but it comes out to be the same amount….if you get RIFd, you get two weeks for every year worked, and when that is paid out, you can file for unemployment,if needed. If you retire, you are voluntarily leaving, and are not eligible for unemployment since you retired

So, if you don't take it you're gone with out the severance ?

No, you can’t get unemployment if you retire, since you weren’t laid off

Can you still draw unemployment, if you accept the early retirement?

Got my email this morning and have to say that it feels like Humana is targeting older associates with tenure that are probably at the higher end of the pay scale. The whole thing makes me sick and while this could be a positive thing for some closer to actual full retirement age, it’s not a good deal for those still in their 50s that don’t have millions in the bank.

It’s true. Letters are supposed to go out today and conversations were had last week.

I hope everyone realizes that when it says, “Comment, it’s anonymous!”, that nothing posted online is truly anonymous. Wi-Fi IP addresses and LTE locations (which is collected in normal analytic processes) can still pinpoint commenters.
I would be very, very cautious about what is shared on this site, especially if you are here (and commenting) specifically because you are worried about being laid off. Personally, I don’t think leaving comments about your company can help you and the situation. Only make things worse for yourself and position.

I know I will receive backlash for this comment, and I’m not saying you can’t do what you want to do. Just don’t say you were never warned.

My stress decreased significantly when I took the stance that I will be RIFd and am ready for the severance and job hunting. I took the control back.

If you have a certain amount of employees, you have to follow a regulated RIF program. Severance included.. if you apply for bankruptcy you do not have to follow that regulated program.

To the poster that said Humana does not have to provide a severance package in a RIF. You are correct however humana will always provide something in terms of a package since they don’t want to get sued.

Go look at the retirement policy in the ASC (go/asc). It spells out the requirements and benefits.

Companywide.

Except severance on a RIF is never guaranteed. The company does not have to provide the same package it has been.

When you say company wide early retirement offers do you mean everyone or just departments with planned rifs?

It’s the same as severance if you’re RIFd

I am at the age and tenure that I will qualify for early retirement however I have NOT received any communication. Frankly, I will not take it because their packages for us peons are ridiculous.
