Constant layoffs

Can anybody remember when was the last time we went without layoffs for more than a month? Even with the restructuring, people are being cut left and right. Yes, it's not a lot of people at once but that doesn't change the fact that we're having non-stop layoffs.

I think the difference is that five years ago T would have large layoff eventss (cleverly called "re-orgs) one a quarter or so. But doing things this way meant that the number of impacted workers triggered the WARN threshold, and so T needed to report this to the government. That's bad press.

So Stink and his gang of misanthropes decided to figure out a way to destroy thousands to tens of thousands of positions every year without the embarrassment of dealing with WARN.

Their first trick was to hide layoffs as voluntary separation by forcing people to either relocate to a hub or resign. The genius of this was that anyone smart enough to not chase a job to Dallas or Atlanta only to be let go a year later was voluntarily resigning -- no layoff! But yeah, functionally a layoff in disguise.

Their next trick was to hide layoffs as random ad-hoc firings -- three people here in the first week, seven there next week, one somewhere else a week later, etc. Slower, sure, but again, so small and discrete that there was no WARN necessity.

And their last trick will be to again have mass layoffs, but to be certain that each event was limited to a number below the WARN threshold. So you can have 200 employees released at once, but the number was low enough not to be considered WARN event.

Stink may be the most incompetent CEO out there (next to Elon), but as a sociopathic predator, the man has the cunning of a serial ki-ler.

The main reason to avoid being promoted to an L3 is they are all depressed every holiday season bc they have to lay off parts of their team every November and December.

From my own little bubble group, I believe we did not have layoff during the pandemic so from 2020 to 2022. There was no talk of layoff. At least not in my department. That's about it.

I stopped counting how many layoffs took out people in my org over 22 years. It really has been a constant low level churn, often snaring people I'd think they would have wanted to keep.

Finally got me this month because I refused to "follow the work." (Big ole air quote there, folks. This was not my decision and this is not a transformation. RTO is a layoff of everyone who won't sacrifice and move on their own dime for a job with tenuous prospects. Gets rid of senior people quietly and without age discrimination rules kicking in).

Next round will be when WFH folks don’t RTO five days a week. And first they will get the ones who did not comply to RTO three days a week after six months of being told to.

One large organization cut over 40% of its employees dead in the middle of 2020. Then had to bring half of those back as contractors within a year, so it wasn't even remotely justified. There's no limit to how low they will sink.

Remember that when they ask you to donate money to causes or go on "heart walks". Don't give a cent to make this company look like some sort of decent corporate citizen. It's just so much lipstick on the pig. Give to charity on your own.

Been with T for almost 4 decades and it has been a constant year after year for my entire employment. I was already laid off, but managed to get back, regrettably! I should have left when I had the chance!

Interesting, I have been here 37 years and we have been downsizing ever since. We hire when there is growth and new projects. Otherwise, we purge surplussed employees.

Used to just be an annual layoff that happened usually 5-10% typically the lower performing folks, now they seem to be happening almost monthly for office people. No more big announcements, just bam cut with very little regard to who gets cut and what they are doing. Definitely causing a lot of issues with things getting done or required work when someone that did that work is no longer with the company. It’s happening a lot. One of the big things that made me want to work here was the stability, now that’s a thing of the past.

Year 20 here - in my time the only years we didn’t have a ‘fall festival’ were in the two years prior to DTV purchase-
And that may have happened elsewhere and I didn’t notice from my station.

I've been with T for almost 25 years and we have had layoffs since my 2nd year of employment. Some years are just a few, others are quite a bit. We're in the cycle where quite a bit will be laid off, unfortunately.
