Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Is this true?

T will be shedding 75K employees over the next couple of years.

Where did this number come from? Or are people just stating their guesses as facts now?

Yes, it is true. Listen to the calls, read the investor news, watch interviews, etc. They have been very transparent about this headcount goal.

Run rate of headcount reductions ( surplus) for the last 3 years would fall short of the 75k number. T will achieve that HC by divestiture of business units plus surplus. 2025 is the timeline.

The company needs to stop nickle and diming on headcount. If really serious about getting to 75K, let's see some large numbers on surplus list.

Honestly, rumors have been flying at 55,000 or less

Let the music begin, I'll make certain I got a chair. This reduction, or headcount rationalization is way past due. T needs to get serious about reducing headcount. They have been talking about it for years, little has been done. Dump the geezers!

When the music stops, there will only be less than 100K chairs left. Over the next 2 years, major restructure and cuts coming. Not going to be a fun ride.

Watch “John Oliver” show “Last Week Tonight”. Past weekend episodes is about McKinsey consulting orchestrating layoffs. AT&T is a client.

The employees that are leftover from the relocation "return to office" bulls--- will end up be sold to a consulting firm and turned into contractors so that 75k will be a mix of laid off employees and employees turned into contractors. Att even has a tool for converting employees into contractors and vice versa, something called vector tool i think.

Don't leave on your own, make T pay you severance unless of course you get another job that you can't pass up! Otherwise, stay until T forces you out! Economists are predicting economic pain for Americans in 2024, therefore, make sure you're receiving a payday every two weeks or so rather than having to live on your savings if any!

Getting rid of unneeded workers. Don't want too many workers around doing nothing.

Yeah this board has a lot of insiders with expert knowledge. Worth glancing at occasionally to try and see if there are trends. Probably a fixed number they want to get to but a he-l of a lot of variables that could change that in the next couple of years. Government providing build money, macro economic conditions, new technology, satellite wireless, fixed wireless, etc. Net income per employee might be the best barometer and doubt we can reach Tmob since they are not Union and don’t have our expense base and even they are cutting people. Interesting that when you look at their sites a lot of the discussion is the same other than the names being cussed.

75,000 is a legitimate number but so is 2, 10, 787,539 and 804.

Is it a legitimate number in regards to how many people they need/ want to let go no.

The nice thing about numbers is that there is an infinite amount of them that people can pull out of their as--s when they want to sound smart or controversial, or even in the know or an insider.

You know at the bottom of horoscopes there's usually little note that says " for entertainment purposes only" That's probably the best way to look at this board and the posts on it. (This post included)

Getting good information off here is like looking for needle in a haystack, The needle being the good information and the everything else is from d-mb bigoted id--ts.

It's a legitimate number. T employees can't seem to understand the company is way overstaffed and has been for a long time. The number will get to 75K and when it does there will still be layoffs, dumping geezers and hiring new blood. It's just the way business works. Prepare accordingly! Every employee like Jeremy Legg, with a basket weaving degree, beware!

If T offered a decent severence package of any kind, they would have to limit who could exit because they would lose a large majority of their experienced workforce.

Anyone even close to retirement ( which is quite a lot of folks in the pension plan ) would probably leave this place without a second thought.

"We have been given months to prepare. And a lot of adult employees have said they will relocate fully knowing this is a lie."

Oh yeah, the initial "John" letter had so many details to allow folks to plan, but of course your manager had ALL the answers didn't they?

Being an a zz clown is no way to go through life.

If you’re asked to relocate, you tell them you will and then you do not, you will be fired with no severance, won’t be eligible for unemployment etc. That would only be wise to do if and only if, the move date was like 12 or more months away and off payroll was longer than what you would have gotten for severance. However, it would have been best to just say you wouldn’t relocate, which makes you eligible for severance/UI benefits and makes their numbers look more accurate potentially saving you and your teams jobs in place and not having to move.

“don't expect to be treated like Professionals and adults and be given enough time to prepare...prepare now,”

We have been given months to prepare. And a lot of adult employees have said they will relocate fully knowing this is a lie.

A voluntary surplus would likely accomplish close to this, but that would be ethical.

either way, you won't know until the day you get the call/letter...don't expect to be treated like Professionals and adults and be given enough time to prepare...prepare now, it can come whenever you least expect it...and no manager or management in ATT is being transparent...the plan is continue the torute and uncertainty hoping folks will bail on their own

Since T will have to pay severance regardless of how an employee exits the company, why doesn't it just ask all employees who agrees to leave willingly rather than laying off those that would like to remain or need to remain employed by T. If they are laid off, T will pay severance, if the employee agrees to leave in agreement with T, then they still receive severance, it's a win-win! Would be a painless transition!
