Manager got laid off. What’s next for me and our team?

Very nervous. It’s review time. No one knows who our next manager will be.

There was a reason your manager got laid off. He was a slacker, a deadwood. Those kinds don't do anything, don't contribute anything, don't add any values to the company. Now you guys will be in good hands. Wells Fargo needs to get rid of many more slacker managers and cut costs.

My manager got laid off a few years back. We all moved under a different manager. Team stayed fully intact with no changes other than the manager. They moved all the existing directs of new manager to others so it was literally just moving someone new in charge. Spans and Layers about 3 years ago now.

They’ve moved me to a diff manager / team when that happened. And your year end is based off your numbers

The new manager will come in and direct you to do the opposite of whatever the old manager did. Doesn’t matter if it’s working or not. No way will a new person come in and say their predecessor did a great job, just keep doing what you’re doing.

Resistance is futile, even if the new manager tells you to do something you know will not work. Especially then.

Just smile and hide your feelings. Extra credit if you can compliment the new person on their great ideas, but not everyone has the bottom kissing gene, so don’t worry if you can’t. Just don’t be negative.

Most managers are insecure, paranoid, arrogant, egotistic, control freaks. They can be manipulative, passive aggressive or simply aggressive. If something goes wrong, they will never hesitate to throw you under the bus. They pretend to care about you, but in reality, It's all about them. It is extremely dangerous to trust them. So be careful and good luck.

Be prepared for a whole new way of functioning. New managers like to come in tough and shake things up. Show up early, don’t talk about hating going into the office, follow all policies and act like you love your job. With a new manager, it’s all about him or her establishing their new authority. They’re not there to be your friend. They may be charged with getting rid of the bottom feeders and slackers that the previous manager protected for some reason. Best of luck, OP.

We lost our manager and inherited another manager. But our team is so small and soon will shrink even more. What's going to happen to our new manager? What a mess this place is.

Last two managers I’ve had were displaced, so…. I’m just waiting for the confidential meeting invite myself.

Doom and gloom ahead for sure. I can’t sleep at night because of the anxiety over losing my manager who has protected me for many years. I may have to actually start performing. Scary.

"First I’ve heard of any managers getting laid off. In tech it’s always the worker bees and never any managers."

Infrastructure lost a slew of managers back in 2021. The mo--ns who they brought in from UBS and Goldman were willfully clueless. Tired of ba----g my head against the wall, so I left for greener fields with brighter people.

Just hope your new manager is not located on site with you - clocking time in office and watching your every move. That would be awful!

What do managers do? Hold lame weekly meetings, tell us about upcoming org changes, remind us to take training, remind us to go to the office, and conduct bogus performance reviews. They don't really know/understand what we do, they don't do much else other than attending unnecessary meetings all day every day. But they get paid a lot more than the staff members.

Don't worry OP. Your new manager will probably be internal and tell you to keep doing what your doing. Because they won't know anything until they get up to speed. You will get what you got for mid-year reviews.

Finally, the low performers who have been shielded for years will be exposed.

That happened to us a few years ago. We had a good manager before, but we got a much better one assigned to our team. How I knew they were good, the first thing they asked “teach me what you do.” They listened. They were also a quick study. They were open to suggestions for improving what we did, but didn’t make any changes without our buy-in. I know that’s not always the case, but we lucked out.

Dismantling your team. Get rid of the manager and everyone will quit

They will assign a new manager who is much worse than the previous one. The company wants to make your life miserable and make you want to quit. Brace for impact, good luck.
